Health Care Costs Tops the Public’s Economic Worries
KFF Health News ^ | Jan 2026

Heading into this midterm election year, the cost of health care tops the public’s economic anxieties and more than 4 in 10 voters say the issue will have a major impact on their vote, a new KFF Health Tracking poll finds.

Voters, including independents, currently trust Democrats more than Republicans to address the cost of health care and most other health care issues, though neither party has an advantage on addressing the overall cost of living, the poll finds.

A majority (56%) of the public expect health care costs for their family to become less affordable in the coming year. About 1 in 5 say that their health care costs have increased more quickly than other necessities such as monthly utilities (23%) and food and groceries (21%).

Two thirds (67%) of the public say that Congress did “the wrong thing” by allowing the tax credits to expire, twice the share (33%) that says Congress did “the right thing.”

Large majorities of Democrats (89%) and independents (72%) say that Congress did the wrong thing. While most Republicans (63%) and MAGA supporters (64%) say Congress did the right thing, about a third of each group says that Congress did the wrong thing.

People “trust” the Dems to give them “free money” to pay for their health care

This is a problem that Obama “solved” about 15 years ago. And his solution has been making everyone miserable ever since.

Maybe de-regulation would be a good idea. Just throw the whole industry wide open. Let the customers shop around all 50 states and buy the best package they can find — full coverage, catastrophic coverage, limited coverage, whatever they feel meets their needs and whatever they can find for sale at a decent price. Maximize competition to lower prices. Government should step aside and stop “helping”.

The real problem here is that even REPUBLICANS love the provisions of ObamaCare that have been the biggest factors in driving up health insurance costs over the last 15+ years.

This is an issue that has been a top issue for years. The Republicans should have a well thought out response to Obamacare that is a top agenda item that they all are on board with. And yet when they talk about it, its amateur hour and you know nothing is going to get done, or that they will try to pull something out of their ass at the last minute. Its why they lose.

Too much talk about who will pay my bill. Not enough talk about why the costs are so high to begin with.

Well, it’s a uniparty.

A big part of our Revolution was the issue of “no taxation without representation”. Personally, when I look at the government we have today, I feel that voters have no representation on any issue at all. It’s just lobbyists from various Big Interests who spread money between both parties and craft legislation to further the goals of the already very powerful. People like me don’t enter into that equation at all.

My husband and I haven’t had a good insurance the last few years. We use a concierge physician for $200 a month and carry major medical. We pay out of pocket , for cash and are able to negotiate much better pricing, better then fixed insurance reimbursement. Most people can withstand the cost of this type of medical, especially those under 60. Get rid of subsidized insurance.

Our doctor, whom we had for many years, decided to go the concierge route, which we could not afford. On the advice of a friend, we instead went to our local community health clinic, which costs $39 A visit (fee for Medicare patients), which includes any lab work required. The provider is a nurse practitioner, who has decades of experience and is an absolute rock star! We are so thankful for her! She watches over her patients with skill and dedication which, frankly, I cannot say about our former doctor. Our town has many low income people, and this Clinic is truly a blessing.

Half the country is obese , voting for dems isn’t going to fix that problem.

There once was a warmonger Republican who was the deciding vote to saddle us with Obamacare when there was the opportunity to defeat it.

Once again, thank the good ole GOP elite for coming through for the democrat party.

Health care costs do not top the public’s concerns.
Healthcare costs top the concerns of the 20% impacted the most.
Housing costs top the concerns of the 20% impacted the most.
Grocery Store costs top the concerns of the 20% impacted the most.
20% have a top concern that is some other issue other than the cost of living.
20% have no top concern. Their concern is split between many, many things.

How to put together a coalition is the challenge.

The problem — as usual — is that we need more “health,” and not simply bigger pools of funding for health care workers, scammers and fraudsters to help themselves.
