Treasury, House panel launch probes into Tim Walz’s handling of $1B food aid fraud — and they could make criminal referrals

WASHINGTON — A powerful US House committee and the Treasury Department both launched investigations into Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz’s involvement in a “massive fraud” scheme that involved Somali immigrants bilking more than $1 billion from taxpayers, they revealed Monday.

House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) told The Post that his panel “will conduct a thorough investigation into Governor Walz’s failure to safeguard taxpayer dollars” as a result.

“Minnesota Governor Tim Walz was warned about massive fraud in a pandemic food-aid program for children, yet he failed to act. Instead, whistleblowers who raised concerns faced retaliation,” Comer said.

“Because of Governor Walz’s negligence, criminals — including Somali terrorists — stole nearly $1 billion from the program while children suffered.”

As chairman of the powerful GOP-led panel, Comer can issue subpoenas and refer alleged crimes to the Department of Justice for potential criminal prosecution.

The DOJ has already convicted 59 fraudsters in the scheme.

Also on Monday, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent posted on X that he had instructed his investigators to dig into how “the feckless mismanagement of the Biden Administration and Governor Tim Walz” allowed tax dollars to be funneled to Al-Shabaab terrorists.

The revelations about the scale of the $1 billion fraud for a COVID-era food relief program are new — as is the claim that some of the money flowed back to the Somali terrorist organization.

Our laws provide very thorough protection of whistleblowers.
And every whistleblower I have ever heard of has been stomped on very thoroughly.

I want to bring up a topic which I have not read nor heard about anyone mentioning. This appears to be the best case to use for the topic. Not only was the fraud, waste and criminal activity massive, but repeatedly numerous whistleblower allegations reported by government insiders to the Governor’s office about the actions.

I believe that elected, appointed and other high level government officials have a Fiduciary Responsibility to the taxpayers. Thus I believe that these government leaders should be held to account for these actions they allowed by not preventing nor stopping.

Note: A Fiduciary Responsibility is the legal and ethical obligation to act in the best interest of another party.

Note, some may say there is no Law or policy covering these leaders’ failures to act. But I would argue that there is an implied duty of good faith and fair dealing when spending tax payers’ funds.

Courts have occasionally recognized that government actors can breach duties analogous to fiduciary duties when they misuse public funds or abuse their office, particularly in corruption cases.

While not quite the same as fiduciary duty, the public trust doctrine is a long-standing legal principle that government officials hold certain resources (and powers) in trust for the public.

Government leaders act as trustees of public resources, and therefore they have fiduciary-like obligations of care, loyalty, and good faith toward taxpayers.

Administrative law does impose duties of reasonableness, good faith, and non-arbitrary decision-making under the Administrative Procedure Act (APA).

When officials ignore credible whistleblower reports or fail to address known fraud, they may violate these standards.

Failure to act on known waste or fraud can trigger inspector general investigations, ethics reviews, and legislative oversight actions.

Failing to act can, in some jurisdictions, be considered:

negligence

dereliction of duty

abuse of office

contributing to fraud by willful blindness

To me, this is the perfect example of a longterm problem with our governmental leaders and needs to be corrected!

True. Republicans certainly excel at strongly worded letters.

I’m sure the idea here with the whistleblowers is done so they won’t do that again. After that, the criminal activity just keeps on increasing & it seems that happens a lot these days. Punish the innocent so they can overlook the guilty. Well, if all else fails, God will not overlook the guilty & at some point, there WILL be a reckoning

Excuse me, you are100% correct, but we are dealing with politics and the democrats here.

Pardon my cynicism here, but being 100% correct is meaningless.

Remember how ODD it was that Kamala chose TIM WALZ to be her running mate?

Well, perhaps a CUT OF THAT $1 BILLION was enough for him to be able to BUY THAT VP SPOT !!!!! And YES there is evidence that he attempted to BURY THE FRAUD at EVERY turn. HE WAS GETTING BIG KICKBACKS to avoid stopping the fraud !!!!

Understand, but we need to start somewhere and that begins with this situation. Time to use the courts to find him guilty and lock him up! That would be a great incentive to prevent others.

Next the taxpayers need to personally sue him for damages! That will be a stronger incentive to prevent the others.

A one... two punch!

How many votes does $1 billion buy these days?

Tampon Tim may be getting ten percent of all the fraud money.
Holy crap that would be a lot of money.
If this gets too hot for him he will just escape to munchkinland which BTW does not have an extradition treaty.

"I’m sure the idea here with the whistleblowers is done so they won’t do that again."

The penalty for blowing a whistle in government institutions is loss of job, loss of career, loss of pension, healthcare, etc.

If you blow that whistle, be prepared to lose everything. The system will destroy you. But God is good and will take care of us.
