Health officials upgraded a recent travel warning amid a concerning surge of a mosquito-borne illness that causes pain potentially lasting for years.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued a Level 2 travel warning for Guangdong Province in China, advising visitors to “practice enhanced precautions” due to an outbreak of chikungunya.
The outbreak has shaken the province, with Foshan city at the epicenter, sparking an aggressive response from authorities that some are comparing to early COVID-era measures.
Thousands of people in China have been infected with the painful virus.
It’s an illness that is spread when a mosquito carrying the chikungunya virus bites a person, according to the Cleveland Clinic.
Chikungunya is not spread from person to person, but by the bites of infected Aedes mosquitoes, particularly in warm, humid climates.
Despite not being deadly in most cases, the illness can cause intense joint pain lasting weeks, months or even years — and has prompted drastic containment measures in affected areas.

Good question - did some searching and found, “The NIH has been involved in funding various research projects related to Chikungunya, focusing on understanding the virus and developing vaccines.”
Which means they may very well have done so to “better study” it...

Should we mask up now?
OMG OMG OMG, shut down the country, no socializing, everyone MUST wear a mask AND latex gloves, stand 6 feet apart everywhere, OMG OMG OMG we’re all gonna die, shut down all schools, the only places allowed to be open are big box stores, grocery stores and liquor stores......AND if you buy canned goods or liquor you MUST wipe down each can and bottle before entering your home, keep a bucket of soapy water and a sponge in your backyard so you can accomplish this. Take your shoes off before entering your home and once inside, strip naked and take a shower, AND, be sure to change the mask BEFORE showering, you MUST wear a mask while showering and of course while driving, especially if you are driving alone, no opening any windows, car or home. You must wear a mask when jogging or walking your dog. AND, do not attempt to kill any mosquitos, if you see one, you must run the other way, do not use Raid or any other product to eliminate these mosquitos, we want this plan-demic to last as long as possible. A vaccine is being developed and every, yes every person in the country WILL get the vaccine whether you want it or not. We are the government, we know where you are, we will track you down and force you to get the shot. Democrat run states will be shut down indefinitely, people will not be allowed to move or leave those states under any circumstances, we ARE watching you. Oh, and, have a nice day.

Chikungunya, even the name sounds terrible.
A couple of years ago for a few years, mosquitos were really bad (you couldn’t roll down window, 50 60 mosquitos would swarm in if you tried, and walking was a nightmare- it got really bad) because the fella that sprayed for them around the towns passed away and Noone took their place. Then so eone stepped up and did, and summers are bearable again. Course we gotta still contend with horse flies, black flies, no see-ums, but we can at least breath now without inhaling mouthful of mosquitos.
I have practiced travel medicine for a long, long time - and education about mosquito precautions when traveling to areas where mosquito-borne illnesses are prevalent (including Chickungunya) has been standard for all that time.
Not sure how an “outbreak” of Chickungunya in Guangdong province differs from standard conditions.
Probably caused by Trump, somehow.

The only fix is to contain anyone diagnosed with the disease. Do not let them back into the US.
How about just banning US visits to China so that we reduce the chances of bringing it here.
