Long-term cannabis use can lead to severe vomiting, and U.S. emergency departments are seeing increasing numbers of adolescents with this illness, according to recent research out of Boston.Increases were seen across the U.S., regardless of states’ recreational cannabis legalization status, the study said. Severe nausea and vomiting caused by long-term cannabis use is called cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome, according to the Cleveland Clinic. The only cure is to stop using cannabis, although hot baths and showers may relieve symptoms.
Research findings recently published in a research letter in JAMA Network Open stated that:
-U.S. emergency department visits for cannabis hyperemesis syndrome among adolescents increased more than 10-fold in recent years. From 2016 through 2023, cannabis hyperemesis syndrome encounters among 13- to 21-year-olds increased by 49% per year.
-Overall, from 2016 through 2023, there were 4,571 identified cannabis hyperemesis syndrome cases in U.S. emergency departments, with a median age of 17.
-Nearly two-thirds of patients were female, 38.7% were white, 28.4% were Hispanic, and 24.8% were Black.
-The number of emergency department visits related to cannabis hyperemesis syndrome increased by 32.5% per million emergency department encounters per year in states with recreational cannabis legalization, and by 49.3% per million per year in states that have not legalized recreational cannabis, researchers said.

Nah, can’t be. FR’s moronic libertarians assure us weed is safe. /s
Wait ... what?
You mean the pot wahhabists?
Yet another reason they call it dope.
wait 20 years and lung cancer will skyrocket. Mark my words, nothing but clean air should go into your lungs!
Even professional bakers develop lung issues from inhaling the flour.
Worthless And Weak!
ER folks call it scromiting
Some of the “high” felt by users is a type of vertigo.
No wonder they puke.
From the Cleveland Clinic: https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/21665-cannabis-hyperemesis-syndrome
Cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome (CHS) happens when you have cycles of nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain after using cannabis (marijuana) for a long time. People with CHS often find temporary relief from these symptoms by taking hot baths and showers.
“Hyperemesis” means severe vomiting. Cannabinoids are compounds in the Cannabis sativa plant that bind to cannabinoid receptors in your brain, spinal cord, gastrointestinal tract and other body tissues. Examples of cannabinoids include tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD).
CHS is more than just a side effect of marijuana use. It’s a condition that can lead to serious health complications if you don’t get treatment for it.
Scromiting:
Some people call certain symptoms of CHS “scromiting.” The term combines “vomiting” and “screaming.” You may have intense pain, which causes you to scream while you vomit.
True.
If you ever needed a reason not to smoke marijuana, this article is one.
“ The only cure is to stop using cannabis”
That’s an easy cure.
I think this must be from eating gummies or other delivery methods than traditional smoking.
Generally THC is anti-emetic. So it is involved in emesis regulation and response. But overexposure of a drug can cause the body to down-regulate a biological system.
No all cannabinoid products
I found this in reference to wahabis: "...they are by far the most hateful of all sects.." Libertarians definitely wear that brand.
That also goes for fungal mycotoxins found on marijuana leaves. Aspergillus, Penicillium, Fusarium, and Mucor all produce cancer causing mycotoxins to some degree. But hey, never stop a pothead wanting to get stoned.
I’m not talking about products per se, but delivery methods.
Chronic smoking of pot did not seem to cause this so I am thinking the different methods available and commonly used now cause different pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic situations which can be associated with this hyperemesis.
I have heard this frequently from people I encounter in EMS. Then I know its not bad Chinese.
Chronic smoking has caused this as have other delivery methods. it is a neurological disorder. Have worked with CHS for over 10 years.
