NASA’s Webb telescope finds a new tiny moon around Uranus

The Webb Space Telescope has spotted a new tiny moon orbiting Uranus.

The new member of the lunar gang, announced Tuesday by NASA, appears to be just six miles (10 kilometers) wide. It was spotted by the telescope’s near-infrared camera during observations in February.

Scientists think it hid for so long — even eluding the Voyager 2 spacecraft during its flyby about 40 years ago — because of its faintness and small size.

Uranus has 28 known moons that are named after characters from Shakespeare and Alexander Pope. About half are smaller and orbit the planet at closer range. This newest addition, still nameless, ups the planet’s total moon count to 29.

Every 84 years, when Uranus goes into Gemini, the USA has seen war. Uranus goes into Gemini 2025-2033

American Revolutionary War (1775-1783): This period doesn’t exactly match a Uranus return in Gemini, but it’s close to when the United States was founded in 1776, with Uranus in Gemini. The Revolutionary War marked the birth of the nation, coinciding closely with Uranus’ transit through Gemini (May 1767 - April 1779).

American Civil War (1861-1865): The next Uranus in Gemini phase occurred from April 1859 to March 1871. The Civil War, which began in 1861, fits within this timeframe. This war fundamentally reshaped the nation, coinciding with a period of dramatic social and political upheaval as Uranus transited Gemini.

World War II (1939-1945): While the U.S. involvement in WWII began in late 1941, Uranus had entered Gemini in August 1941 and remained there until September 1948. This global conflict greatly influenced the geopolitical landscape, including the U.S.’s role as a world power.

Forecasted Uranus Return: Uranus is expected to return to Gemini in July 2025 and will remain until July 2033.

We could remedy that by giving the planet a less exploitable name. I recommend “Urpenis”.

“”He’s the guy who thoughtlessly named our seventh planet Uranus.””

I blame the Greeks.

You might see 200 moons in Baltimore, they would probably be in the eclipse faze if you tried to spot them after dark.

So basically, anything, no matter how small, can be a moon if it orbits a planet.

The way I see it is: none of them are moons. There is one Moon and it orbits Earth. The other non man-made objects orbiting planets are natural satellites.

Didn't he give us Bode's Law?

I believe the discoverer, William Herschel, wanted to name the planet Georgium Sidus, in honor of King George III.

No name tiny moon orbiting Uranus?

The answer screams out! "Dingleberry"!

1st: Harpotoo - you need a better dictionary. ;-)

But per the article: "Uranus has 28 known moons that are named after characters from Shakespeare and Alexander Pope"

Searching Pope and Shakespeare and Dingleberry yielded no direct links but I did find this:

Now for a link to something Shakespearean? Obviously right here:

“The rankest compound of villainous smell that ever offended nostril”

The Merry Wives of Windsor (Act 3, Scene 5)

Tenuous link to Shakespeare where the astronomers need help with a simple name. My work here is done.

Dingleberry!
