For centuries, its origins were shrouded in mystery. But a forgotten cemetery near Lake Issyk Kul in Kyrgyzstan has revealed stunning new evidence. In this documentary-style deep dive, we explore how 800-year-old graves, ancient inscriptions, and cutting-edge DNA analysis led scientists to pinpoint the true birthplace of the plague that killed tens of millions across Europe, Asia, and North Africa.

Learn how a single strain of Yersinia pestis, preserved in the teeth of medieval plague victims, was identified as the ancestral source of the Black Death. Discover how trade routes, climate change, and human mobility allowed a microscopic killer to reshape global history—and how modern science finally uncovered the origin of it all.

Based on groundbreaking research published in Science, this is the story of how the past continues to speak through stone, bone, and DNA.

In a freakish and bad luck event for mankind the bacteria Yersinia pestis appears to have mutated to its deadly form.

Of all places in an area with a village specializing in trade on the Silk Road.

Trump's fault. /sarc tag for those of you in Rio Linda

Trump's also the reason that indigenous Americans had tuberculosis and smallpox before Columbus' arrival.

Good catch. Of course they want us to believe it's man-made climate change. However, I believe there has been real climate change, at least as long as mankind has had written language and recorded things.

Some say the Medieval Warm Period topped out around AD 1300 (900 years ago) and began the Little Ice Age cooling period. Whenever exactly it began, with it began about 500 or 600 years of lower crop yields, less predictable rain patterns, and more deaths by plague. This is just like the other cooling periods (Dark Age from about AD 300 to AD 900, and Minoan Dark Age from about 11th century BC to maybe 3rd century BC -- corresponding to the Era of Kings in the Bible).

An argument can be made that many of the atrocities committed during these times are because the various people groups are struggling to survive. The warm periods have a few leaders like Hitler, Stalin, and Mao who push atrocities. But during the cooling periods, just about every people group is Hitleresque, taking over each other's land and killing or enslaving to get more crop yield out of tough growing seasons.

Yet during the warming periods the crop yields improve, the precipitation is more predictable, and there are less deaths by plague. Including in our Modern Warm Period.

Europe gets the attention about plague deaths, but an examination of what happened in China is mind-boggling. Entire cities were wiped out.

Good call. I almost replied to my own post with the correction but decided it would be annoying to double post.

Yes. You are correct. Languished

I remember reading about the plague and that people in Europe believed it came from the east. So they seem to have been correct. Although, if I remember right, they believed the disease was reaped into their crops in the fields at night. Hence the origin of the reaper mythos.
