Was always partial to this particular piece, even tho' I'm not a huge Mozart fan:

First "chamber music" piece I ever composed was a sonata for oboe and piano. Second was a wind quintet. Love the sound, especially in baroque settings paired with recorder.

My eldest daughter played the Oboe in HS and got a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Performance/Oboe. I loved listening to her play that instrument.

Whever I played bassoon, the dog would do that tilty-head thing. Kinda funny.

Thank you for posting this. You made me tune up Mozart’s “Oboe Concerto in C Major.” Frankfurt Radio Symphony featuring François Leleux on the Oboe. I have no knowledge of music or famous classical musicians— just copying the information — but I am thoroughly enjoying this.

LOL, I get that completely. That said, I have always thought this was utterly moving and astonishing:

The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards - Amazing Grace

Granted, Amazing Grace on Bagpipes is said to be the only thing that does sound good on them, so it is kind of cheating to use this as an example!

I love “that tilty-head thing”! What kind of dog do you have? (that sometimes tickles me even more, especially if it is a silly or funny dog like a boxer!)

The music teacher said I had no musical aptitude and no natural ability and gave up on me. She saw I was heart broken and said if I wanted to I could blow the piano player . . but I declined.

Q: why do bagpipe players walk when they play?
A: it’s a desperate attempt to get away from that SOUND!

Always LOVED Roxy Music and Andy Mackay’s Oboe playing. Born in 1946, he’s still going strong, IIRC.

You just have to be able to squeeze your lips together really hard.

My wife plays oboe and English horn.

I canna comment further

They say oboe players usually die of a heart attack in their mid 50s.

Too true. The stress they put upon themselves while playing is significant

I played for two years in high school. Was decent. It is hard to get to the point that you can close down on the reed and still be relaxed. Loved listening to Paul McCandless.

The song, “Gabriel’s Oboe,” from Ennio Morricone’s soundtrack from the movie, “The Mission,” is one of the most sublime pieces of music in the history of man.

As others have noted, the bassoon is also a double-reed woodwind. I always liked the name given the bassoon by other band/orchestra members: the farting bed post.
