First "chamber music" piece I ever composed was a sonata for oboe and piano. Second was a wind quintet. Love the sound, especially in baroque settings paired with recorder.
When I was a young teen, long long ago, our family had no classical music recordings, just Broadway score albums, and there was little access for me to hear classical music. So when a boy in our school started playing the oboe, I asked him to play it for me over the phone in the evenings. It is an uniquely beautiful sound.
After leaving home, I went to live in Philadelphia, steps away from the Academy of Music, with its famed orchestra. Access! Heavenly! Even from the cheap seats!
