A middle-aged Nebraska surgeon ruined his enviable life after deciding to take part in a street-racing contest that left a 22 year-old woman dead.
Mark Carlson, 63, was sentenced to 10-14 years in prison after he was convicted of the manslaughter killing of Anna Bosma in September, 2023.
The thrillseeking medic was racing another driver when he lost control of his Mercedes and slammed head-on into Bosma's car at over 100mph, killing her on impact.
Bosma's boyfriend was in the passenger seat and survived the deadly collision.
The couple, who lived in South Dakota, was in Omaha for a Labor Day getaway when tragedy struck.
Carlson was the director of the Center for Advanced Surgical Technology at the University of Nebraska Medical Center before the crash.
He was married to a respected lawyer, Sarah Gloden, who is the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs and the Creighton University School of Law.
But the two separated sometime after the tragedy, with Gloden keeping their $880,000 mansion, where she now lives with her sons.
Carlson apologized to Bosma's family during his sentencing on Thursday.
'I now want to apologize to Anna’s parents, family, friends and community for her death,' he told the court.
'I am sorry for the lateness of this apology, which comes 21 months after Anna’s passing. I would give anything to change the events of Sept. 1, 2023.'
Carlson's lawyers had claimed that he had fainted before the crash and the car's lane-assist technology kept him on the road while speeding.
However, an engineer testified that the lane-assist was turned off in the car, as reported by First Alert 6.

The midlife crisis wasn’t sexual. He was racing on the street in Omaha and killed a woman from SD who was visiting over Labor Day.
Moving van in the driveway, she’s throwing out his stuff.
63 is not middle aged! LOL
You don’t live to 126.
Geez Louise!
Just last week in Colorado:
The 15-y/o unnamed Colombian teen got probation.
I used to be a regular at drag strip. I agree, if you’re going to race, do it legally.
The end of middle age is generally acknowledged to be around 65, though some people stretch the definition to 72 or so. After that, you're pretty firmly in old geezer territory.
” an engineer testified that the lane-assist was turned off in the car”
Uhhh. Does “land assist” prevent idiots from driving 100MPH in traffic?
Some Mercedes owners’ egos cannot tolerate being passed. They will speed up to ridiculous speeds to stay in front.
I don’t know the details. It may have been the guy’s first time racing on the street. You get caught up in a moment and make a mistake. But for the grace of God, go some of us
I had an old Mercedes diesel for a time - it was a family hand-me-down. Top speed was about 75 mph. I got passed all the time on the freeway, but hardly any tailgaters due to the exhaust smell and smoke.
I outran a Celica Supra on a windy road once, though. The thing really handled well.
Men...so many can’t seem to grow up past the ‘I’m better than you are’ stage...
Well, personally i wouldn’t want a slave surgeon who has nothing to lose. Let him just rot in prison and think about how he took a life and threw away his own.
The other man did not kill someone.
This has happened in other cases as well. The people who were just racing get small sentences and the people who murder when they were racing get longer ones.
Because they murdered someone.
And that is just a slightly more serious crime.
Has nothing to do with lawyers.
Was the other person he was racing with charged? Should have been.
Never mind, I see it right above. 6 months, way too little. It takes two to have a race.
10-14 years? Robbing someone of their future should cost the rest of the killer’s.

Regards,
“This is the so-called mansion, that his wife got”
That’s a typical house in a middle class subdivision here in TN. Certainly not a mansion. Maybe it’s different where they live.
When we lived in SoCal, the make of cars created an interesting hierarchy. The people driving their uppity cars CLAIMED right-of-way, even if they were in the wrong. (I don’t recall Mercedes owners being offenders so much, but BMW, et al., were obnoxious.)
You remember it well.
Toying with those types was great fun.
