This Newsweek article helped me a little in trying to understand this very large worldwide issue that I had never paid attention to.

It hit me this week as I was seeking a roofer to repair several roofs I want to have fixed/replaced so my children are not stuck with problems left to me by my parents when they died. I was seeking estimates on raised ridge sheet metal roofing which can last for 75 years, versus membrane or shingle roofing with 20 or 25 years life. Roofer told me he will have to see how all this tarrif business shakes out as he has 3 different suppliers and does not know what countries supplies their metal.

Just educated a fellow down at the local store about this.
Guy was bitching about how these tariffs were gonna cost us this an that.

I gave him, and everybody there an education.
I always buy a refill coffee. One dollar. I had put the refill up on the counter.

“That is the tariff.” “He has to pay me 40 cents to sell me a refill coffee for 1 dollar.”
“So..we are paying them bastards to purchase our manufsctured goods.”

“I go to your repair shop to get something, and from now on, you pay me 40% before i buy it from you.”
When i left..and that was just a half hour ago, the whole place was pissed at the foriegn countries doing this.

This is the right move - long overdue - in the theory of the “evolution of cooperation.” The best long term win-win strategy is to cooperate until the other side “defects” and then you defect. When the other side starts to cooperate you immediately return to cooperation.

We are only about 50 years late in starting this. The other strategy - you try to buy cooperation just leads to the global protection racket of which the citizens of the US are now the victim.
