Dying of dysentery is now more than just a video game meme in Oregon.
In a disgusting turn of events straight out of the “Oregon Trail” game, the diarrhea-inducing malady dysentery is making a stomach-churning comeback in a densely populated region of the state.
Cases of the hyper-contagious bacterial disease have surged in Multnomah County, with health officials reporting 40 cases of the wretched sickness in January, according to the Multnomah County Health Department, KOIN reported.
The infection, also known as shigellosis, can spread through exposure with infected feces, contaminated food or water, or sexual contact – with person-to-person the most common form of transmission, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Portland does not get their drinking water from the Columbia River.
More likely from vagrants’ public defecation on sidewalks and in the homeless agglomerations (calling them “camps” is an insult to people who know that camping involves proper field sanitation).
Most of us who served in Vietnam, at least in a field unit came down with this. One form or another. Amoebic/Bacillary . Damned near killed me...

The article clearly states the cases are from the homeless and drug sharing.

Flagyl and tetracycline cleared them up in about two weeks, but I went from 135 to 115.

And by Multnomah county they mean Portland. An open air sewer with druggies and bums crapping all over the downtown and waterfront area.
Sounds like a homeless/foreign population thing.
One of the first things humans invented when we settled down was a way to deal with human waste and keep the water supply clean.
Just look at Göbekli Tepe. Oldest thing we have found and what did we build? A water system.
People living in large groups without cleaning up after themselves, you are going to get nasty diseases.
Just the way it is.
