The Food and Drug Administration has upgraded its classification of a broccoli recall initially reported in late December, labeling it as “Class I” — the agency’s most serious recall category.
Braga Fresh, of Salinas, California, had initially issued an “advisory” for a specific lot of Marketside Broccoli Florets in late December, after Health and Human Services workers discovered Listeria monocytogenes in “multiple samples” from a Texas Walmart.
The broccoli had been distributed to Walmart stores in 20 states: Alaska, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.
No illnesses had been reported at the time of the initial advisory. Consumers were advised to throw away the potentially affected product and contact Braga Fresh with any other concerns.
In late January, however, the FDA upgraded the recall to a Class I, the FDA’s website shows.
Class I, the FDA says, involve “a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of, or exposure to, a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.”
A representative for the FDA was not immediately available to confirm if there were still no reports of adverse reactions. The agency’s website indicated the recall is still “ongoing.”
According to the update, the broccoli florets at the center of the recall — as well as the states where they were distributed — are the same described in the previous advisory: 12-ounce packages of Marketside Broccoli Florets with a best-by date of Dec. 10, 2024, and a lot code reading BFFG327A6.
Listeriosis, an infection caused by foodborne listeria monocytogenes bacteria, affects roughly 1,600 people each year, around 260 of whom die, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Those at the highest risk are pregnant women, newborns, young children, those over 65 and those with weakened immune systems. Pregnant woman are also 10 times more likely to contract listeria infection, and pregnant Hispanic women are roughly 24 times more likely. In pregnant women, listeria infection can cause miscarriages, stillbirths or preterm labor.
Symptoms of listeria infection include fever and diarrhea, along with headache, stiff neck, nausea, loss of balance, abdominal pain, confusion and convulsions, according to the CDC and FDA. Pregnant women, however, typically only experience flu-like symptoms and fever, the CDC says.
Instead of the War on Drugs, it has switched to the War on Foods.
The results of illegals dumping in the fields at the farms.
They go to look for jobs. Get turned away and...
Anyway, you’re supposed to boil broccoli till it’s completely soft with a little salt and butter. Kills listeria and tastes better.
Only a jackass eats it crunchy. And they get a lot of gas.
And people wonder why corporate America always promotes large-scale, processed foods, which many deem unhealthy..
The regulatory and financial risk of selling fresh salad greens or vegetables is equally as high as selling pharmaceuticals, but at 1/100th the profit. Its a crappy business.
I buy vegetables from local farmers at farm markets - which are mostly exempt from FDA rules, because they don’t leave the state and they sell de minimus $$ amounts.
So we have a two-tier food system of powerful, large Agri-producers and huge retail on one hand, and some small local farmers with limited scope on the other.
At the same time, USDA/FDA and much of Fed.gov is either de jure or de facto oppressing the small-scale farmer and supplier.
It’s 97 cents a pound at Safeway till tomorrow. Safe? Already ate some.
And before anyone lectures me about vitamins, get a coffee cup and sip the pot liquor the way you’re supposed to. It’s warm and nourishing and tastes good.
BTTT!!!
This is why I don’t eat broccoli. Though its a nearly irresistible treat anytime, I’m just too health conscious to partake.
I hope you are gonna make it! Hope you’re ok. I would miss arguing with you!
I prefer Turnip greens, mustards and collards................
I see you are a man of culture.
I like my greens with a dash of Texas Pete green peppers in vinegar.
But not spinach or Kale........yuck!............
Have it in the fridge.............
That’s the first thing on my list of Never Buy From Walmart. Don’t know why but their broccoli is always rubbery and doesn’t taste that good either.
But in any case, first rule of produce shopping is, as soon as you get it in the house, wash it like a rescued puppy!
Kale tastes like dirt. And I think it’s useful as fishing bait for women in their 20s. But I’m married and haven’t tried that.
You never disappoint!
“as soon as you get it in the house, wash it like a rescued puppy!”
Good idea. I wash with Dawn before I cook it, but not when I bring it home. My dear friend was a Director of Health for a major state, and I was surprised when she told me she used Dawn to wash her veggies and fruits, too.
I ain’t afraid of cancer... I had broccoli for lunch.
Broccoli kills cancer! A lot of people don’t know that; it’s not out yet. It’s true. You find out you got some cancer...(click) get yourself a bowl of broccoli. That’ll wipe it right out in a day or two.
Cauliflower too; cauliflower kills the really big cancers. The ones you can see through clothing from across the street.
Broccoli kills the little ones. The ones that are slowly eating you away from inside while your goofy, half-educated doctor keeps telling you, “You’re doing fine, Jim.”
In fact, bring your doctor a bowl of broccoli. He’s probably got cancer too. Probably picked it up from you. They don’t know what their doing. It’s all guesswork in a white coat.
