‘Very bizarre’ large explosion heard across multiple cities in Salt Lake Valley

According to the West Valley City Police Department, callers from West Valley City, Taylorsville and even Murray reported hearing the loud boom just before 3 a.m. Wednesday. Outdoor home surveillance camera footage from one residence also showed a flash of light.

Officers responded in the area of some reports and couldn’t locate any odd activity or objects that could have fallen. Then, the reports kept coming.

“If we get like a shots fired call then, you know, we’ll get several calls within a neighborhood or maybe a quarter mile,” Merritt said. “But to get calls that are coming in miles apart, it’s obvious this is something big, especially when it’s in different cities — Murray city, that’s several miles away from us so … don’t know what to say about that.”

No, there have been some nights where I had to work outside and I could hear them snapping. It was -22°. It was unnerving because I was a prison officer checking out the fenceline and they sounded a lot like rifle shots.

It was a 75mm recoiless rifle at Snowbird. A round went over the mountain and hit a house under construction in the next valley. Theybreplaced it. Lol.

But then again, the trees that grow here that are native are probably more resistant to that sort of things.

Happens all the time in northern NH, VT and ME, PQ, etc.

I've heard it in maple, birch and beech trees.

Not so much, if at all in soft wood trees.

Interesting.

We have lots of wood on our property. I’ve never noticed it.

My initial thought about the explosion in the article was that it was a meteorite.

The frost quakes here in Missouri actually come from the ground, and they are known to produce light from the electrical charge (I haven’t seen any flashes of light).

They last occured in 2014, but I had never heard of them until just a few days ago.
