You are wrong ---The Earth is only .02% water
Socratic Q & A ^ | 01/20/2035 | Me, myself and I

About 71% of the Earth's surface is water, though it only makes up around 0.02% of the planet's total mass.

Seems about right to me as well.

My “Are you sure?” question was sarcastic/rhetorical, and was directed toward the FReeper who said the small sphere was “obviously” not correct.

“That little ball of water is obviously not the correct scale.”

I suspect it’s close. The Earth is, like, thousands of miles deep and the oceans only average about 2 miles deep.

Mars is the hip place to imagine people colonizing

It ain’t the kind of place to raise your kids.

Mars has plenty of water it’s frozen in it’s crust.

Mars also has the only atmosphere humans could live in with just oxygen tanks and co2 scrubbers. It’s pressure is high enough humans don’t need full pressure suits at low elevations in Mars gravity field. Pure O2 at Mars pressure is just enough to breathe in. Think a haz mat suit vs a full space suit.

Earth is the only place fit to raise kids. The problem with that is nuclear war. Civilization is fortunate that has not happened but it can’t hold forever. Civilization must expand off planet if Civilization is to going to be guaranteed. That means raising kids in the hostile environments off Earth.

How much of the earth’s mass is water?

AI Overview

Water makes up only a very small percentage of the Earth’s total mass, approximately 0.02%. While water covers a large portion of the Earth’s surface (around 71%), the majority of the planet’s mass is made up of the Earth’s solid interior, making water a relatively small contributor to the overall mass.

Never question me.

My entire post-K12 life I’ve believed there to be more water on the planet than ‘scientists’ were willing to concede. A fairly recent discovery lends significant credence to vast reservoirs of water which could explain some historic events.

https://www.natureworldnews.com/articles/72491/20241217/earths-largest-water-reservoir-found-three-times-surface-oceans-depths-below.htm

As stated, not accurate...and point taken.

AI is notorious for GIGO errors...

So if that number holds true for surface water, than the true number including water locked in the mantle or core would be an additional .06%... or .08%. Which would be a much bigger “blob” on the graphic...

AI is not our all powerful overlord yet. I’ll question what I damn well want to... :-)

“So, how is life on a yacht? I’ve never been on one but I’d like a tour sometime when you port.”
I sold my Yacht years ago.
I live on the Big Island of Hawaii.
That place is the furthest away from any continent
on Earth. Not exactly in the middle of the Pacific ocean
but close.
Many here would be happy to give you a tour.

“I see. I’ve been to Kauai. Best vacation. I’ve ever been on. Absolutely beautiful. Lucky you. If I ever hit the lottery.
I like Kauai, but too many tourists!
Of all our islands The Big Island has the most access to old school Hawaii, which is where I live.
I did not get “lucky”, I was hired to work here at an observatory. I had to earn/learn the skills to get that job
and give up a better paying and much higher prestige position at Boeing. I eventually recovered money and position here in Hawaii, but it was not “Luck”, more like God blessed me and my family. I like to give credit where credit is due.
I retired at age 55. So I did OK in Hawaii.
