Washington Post abruptly ‘removes’ politics editor Dan Eggen after Trump win: report
NY Post ^ | 11/21/24 | David Spector

Posted on 11/22/2024 2:01:40 AM PST by Libloather

The Washington Post abruptly removed its politics editor without giving him a reason for the decision, he claimed — the latest shakeup at the left-leaning paper owned by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.

Dan Eggen, a veteran political writer who was named senior politics editor just two years ago, said he was “crushed” after being informed he will be “removed” from his role, according to an email he sent that was obtained by Lachlan Cartwright.

“I struggled with how to write this message since there is an element of begging to it that is not particularly attractive. But what the hey: I was informed Monday that I will be removed as senior politics editor at the end of the year. I will leave it to others to explain why,” the email said.

It was not clear whether Eggen will remain with publication.

A WaPo spokesperson said they don’t comment on personnel decisions when contacted by the New York Post on Thursday.

Eggen did not respond to The Post’s request for comment.

At the time of his promotion in 2022, Eggen had worked on the Washington Post’s politics desk for over a decade and had “established himself as one of our sharpest and most agile editors, elevating our daily report by driving scoops and accountability reporting on some of journalism’s most competitive beats,” the paper said.

His dismissal as politics editor comes as WaPo scrambles to come to grips with Donald Trump’s return to the White House.

Sounds like he’s getting the blame for Trump winning... Which appears a tad unfair, even though it’s somewhat true... If he hadn’t allowed his paper and reporters to write daily ‘we hate Trump’ articles, then Trump would’ve had a lot less publicity and he may have even lost.

The Washington Post has been losing $$millions$$ for years. I suppose Bezos receives a tax write off for the “depreciation.”

The Left suggested that coal miners and others could “learn to code.” Perhaps the former Post employees could “learn to podcast” and see if anyone would actually listen. I hear that the title Air America is available.

If Leticia hadn’t pushed so hard to make Trump look bad, Desantis was way ahead in the polls during the primary before the charges came down.

The left has helped Trump so much from the primaries on through to the election.

Swell of them :)

He was canned because Bezos declared he wanted a more politically balanced editorial staff.
This joker was a far left extremest and Trump hater.
So long sucker!

There was no way DeSantis was ever going to beat Trump in the primaries,
Even Haley did much better than DeSantis did,

I agree: "The Market is self-correcting."

And the Washington Post did not fulfill its mission.

If "Democracy Ends in Darkness", then when editors fail to shed light on BOTH sides of an issue, they are DESTROYING democracy. WaPo is creating more darkness: lying, hiding the truth, and pretending that MAGA is Adolph Hitler and the like.

Plus, Musk's X is doing a standup job destroying the Fake News outlets. They can't compete with the speed of access and rich media that X offers with short clips and tight comments.

X is more compelling than trying to read a WaPo editorial (with advertising distractions around the story) on a small smartphone. People tire of that pretty quickly.

When I see an X link in a Free Republic story, I invariably click it because

To save his investment, Bezos is going to reposition the paper from the partisan and elitist rag it is today.

And yeah, it IS glorious too!

There must be a huge job demand now for editors with a long history of biased leftist reporting…..

Adios!

Bezos bought the Washington Post for the sake of respect and influence. He is no conservative, but he realizes that when a mature business is losing money, it is a failing business. As much as Bezos has the wealth to afford it, he does not want to be known for business failure and declining influence.

How can the Post do better? Obviously, a return to traditional fact based and balanced journalism is essential but will be extraordinarily difficult to carry out because a major change in the work product will be needed. The current staff will fight against that every step of the way, telling themselves that newspapers (and jobs for Lefty journalists) are public goods that should be supported by public spirited billionaires or through taxes.

Unfortunately, by not investigating and criticizing the Biden administration, the Washington Post missed the best opportunity in decades to rebuild their brand. Instead, the Post will have to return to fact based journalism even as unhinged Trump hating beckons every day, like vodka for a determined alcoholic.

Worse, reliable, unbiased, fact based journalism is now beyond the ability of most Post reporters. Like a losing NFL team owner, Bezos will find that simply telling his coaches and players to be better at their jobs will not do the trick of making his team into winners.

Ability matters, and the painful truth is that the Washington Post is loaded up with untalented Lefties incapable of honest, unbiased writing. Slowly, at great expense, Bezos will have to hire new reporters -- even some conservative reporters.

The obsessive hatred of Trump helped get him elected.

Americans should can Bezos for putting him in charge in the first place. LOL!

Reality: Bezos hates Trump so much, he couldn't help himself. Now that Bezos has learned elections have consequences he's trying to cover his ass. Ain't gonna work.

“The obsessive hatred of Trump helped get him elected.”

The left knew their coordinated attacks on candidate Trump would cause his supporters and sympathizers to rally to Trump and suck all the oxygen away from primary opponents.

The left wanted to run against Trump in the general election because they thought the words felon, Nazi, and impeached would ensure their victory.

They did not consider - apparently - that they were fueling an unstoppable movement.

Now they know.

They turned a billionaire New Yorker into an everyman. A sympathetic cult hero like a 1920’s gangster. A guy beat down by the Man just trying to get over.

“The current staff will fight against that every step of the way”

If I owned the paper I would fire all politics and politics related writing, editorial and other content related staff—on the spot. If the food section had showed a history of bias I would fire that staff as well.

I would cease operation of the newspaper for as long as it takes to hire a staff of professional unbiased true journalists and editors.

Then I would hit the “restart” button.
