Walmart workers say its impossible to lock yourself in oven like one where employee, 19, was roasted to death

Walmart employees have voiced confusion over the tragic death of a 19-year-old staff member inside a walk-in oven because they generally 'can't close' on their own.

In a series of TikTok videos, staff and former employees have been sharing insights into the inner mechanics of working inside a Walmart bakery.

It comes on the back of Gursimran Kaur's tragic death last weekend. The 19-year-old girl became stuck inside the walk-in oven of the store she worked at in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Her own mother, who also worked at the store, found her 'charred remains' inside after more than an hour of looking for her on the shop floor, a spokesperson for the family said.

'It doesn't make any sense,' a Walmart employee named Mary said in a TikTok video showcasing the oven.

'This door does not close by itself... It doesn't latch. It's designed not to do that. You have to push it, hear the click.

Mary demonstrated stepping inside of the oven and utilizing the emergency release from the inside of the oven, showing that it is a simple push feature on the other side of the door.

'I'm not trying to theorize or form a conspiracy, it's just hard to wrap my head around it when Walmart's bakery ovens are so safe to use,' she said in a comment.

Her video has been viewed 3.6 million times and sparked an outpouring of responses from other Walmart employees across the nation, who agreed that the oven should not have been able to close easily.

"This girl either committed suicide or was murdered."

Morgana;

If she entered a closed area with lot of bread was "proofing" right at the beginning of the baking cycle, there may have been a high concentration of CO2 and all the O burned up? Perhaps she had a heart attack as a result of Covid Myocarditis, and passed out. Not enough info yet. Need to wait for the autopsy.

"Carbon dioxide is a physiologically important gas, produced by the body as a result of cellular metabolism. It is widely used in the food industry in the carbonation of beverages, in fire extinguishers as an 'inerting' agent and in the chemical industry. Its main mode of action is as an asphyxiant, although it also exerts toxic effects at cellular level. At low concentrations, gaseous carbon dioxide appears to have little toxicological effect. At higher concentrations it leads to an increased respiratory rate, tachycardia, cardiac arrhythmias and impaired consciousness. Concentrations >10% may cause convulsions, coma and death. "

I’d verify if there’s a life insurance policy on this victim. There’s already a GFM account started.

I don’t know if this would be possible with a Walmart bakery oven, but there have been occasional instances over the years in which potentially hazardous equipment has been operated with the safety systems broken, disabled or even intentionally removed (because something is broken and they’ve found an ad hoc work around).

If employees do this themselves because they’ve gotten very casual about something they work with every day, it’s time to break out the Darwin awards. If management, or perhaps the maintenance crew, do this without informing anyone, it’s go to jail time. If a shop is exploiting illegal workers who are afraid to blow the whistle and don’t understand our workplace safety standards, it is also go to jail time.

I don’t have recent examples to point to, but I’ll raise this as a theoretical possibility. There are outfits that do dodgy things and prefer illegals because they’re cheaper and won’t say anything. I’d be astonished if that happened at a Walmart, but all it might take would be a couple of bad apples going rogue at a random site. It’s the kind of thing I would intuitively associate more with small, independent trucking companies than with Walmart bakeries, but ya never know until the investigators have looked into it.

True. Since there is an emergency door release inside the oven, murder is the only reasonable possibility.

WalMarts are generally awash with surveillance cameras — the movements of the victim and anyone else in the entire store, are probably on video. You would think back-of-the-house areas with giant ovens would have complete camera coverage that will nail the murderer.

I will admit, the croissants I bought there tasted too buttery, but I was in a pinch.

Most any walk-in ANYTHING today (freezer, oven, etc.) has an inside emergency release that is mechanical. Big palm sized mechanical button/rod assembly that pushes open any ‘latching’ handle.
