When former President Donald J. Trump decided to take a day off the battleground campaign trail in the waning days of the race to hold a rally Sunday at Madison Square Garden, it prompted a question from many political observers: Why?
New York is hardly a battleground state, and New York City is still a Democratic stronghold. So how come Mr. Trump is planning an event in Midtown Manhattan in the final two weeks of his presidential campaign?
Here are five reasons:
He will get to see his name in lights.
Mr. Trump was a performer and reality TV star before he was a political candidate and president. (It is worth recalling that at the Republican National Convention this summer in Milwaukee, Mr. Trump appeared onstage with a Broadway-style light display spelling out T-R-U-M-P.)
For years, Mr. Trump has measured the significance of his rally venues in part by who had appeared there before. And his yardsticks were usually not other politicians, but singers and other celebrities.
“Do you know how many arenas I’ve beaten Elton John’s record?” Mr. Trump once asked Senator Kevin Cramer, Republican of North Dakota, as he prepared to hold an event during his presidency at the Fargodome at North Dakota State University.
And when he appeared at a rally last month at the Nassau Coliseum on Long Island, Mr. Trump noted proudly that Elvis Presley had played there.

C’mon, man, haven’t you been watching CNN?
I’m guessing Trump wasn’t interviewed for this screed.
Two reasons:
New York, New York.....
It doesn’t matter.
He’s baiting Harris.
If they THINK NY is in play, they have to expend time/money there.
Same with what he did in Coachella.
Takin it to opposition’s side of the court.
The author gives her own made opinion as Trump’s reasons.
Trump has really one reason - to stick it in the eye of NY City and state officials and Democrats, and have that register with people nationally.
The author of this article has to be @ 5 years old to come up with these reasons. In addition, it is written in a 5-year-old’s vocabulary.
So he can campaign for GOP Representatives in New York.
And campaign in New Jersey at the same time (a slight chance of winning that state)
Home town audience. He will pack the house.
If the DEMs are stupid enough to think they could lose NY, they deserve to lose this election. Big waste of time for the DEMs to concentrate any effort on NY. It’s the battleground states where they will steal the election.
Maggie Haberman, is the author.
That’s all one needs to know.
BTW when is the MSG rally?
It’s a HUUUGE media market and covers eastern Pennsylvania. He’ll get a lot of exposure, and get the message out, reach more people, simple
Apparently they wrote that screed and it never occurred to the writer that maybe Trump is trying to shore up the popular vote. My guess is that the author can’t fathom the possibility.
Thumb his nose at the NY justice system.
Reflects his roots and his initial success in a tough city.
All the major national TV news and print have offices there.
NY is not in play. This is classic Trump. He has no realistic chance of winning NY but this will generate news for days on end and he will dominate the news cycle. In turn, this projects confidence that he will win and that will help drive R turnout and make Dems a little more depressed about things. It’s like him bragging about his buildings and apartments. It’s more about projecting the appearance of things than the actual reality of it.

Some truth there, but I have to say I do really like his going into the belly of the beast!
Obviously not.
So did I.
