In 2022, shortly before the midterm elections and the unofficial start of the 2024 presidential campaign, the conservative activist Christopher Rufo traveled to Maine to appear on Tucker Carlson’s Fox Nation streaming talk show. For the previous two years, he was a frequent guest of Mr. Carlson’s. He usually did his hits — on the evils of critical race theory, or the plague of “trans indoctrination” — from his home outside Seattle. This time, he was excited to meet Mr. Carlson in person. When Mr. Rufo arrived at the Fox host’s rustic studio, after a cross-country flight and a 90-minute drive from the Portland airport, he discovered someone else in the Maine backwoods: Donald Trump Jr.
It was a perilous moment for the Trump family. After Jan. 6, Donald Trump had become persona non grata in elite Republican circles. (When he officially began his 2024 presidential campaign after the midterms, Rupert Murdoch’s New York Post buried the news on page 26 under the headline “Been There, Don That.”) Many conservative leaders appeared ready to swing behind the presidential candidacy of Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida, whose promise of “competent Trumpism” — all the right-wing policies and red meat, none of the baggage — was striking a chord. That certainly seemed to be the case with Mr. Carlson, who hosted Mr. DeSantis on his show at least six times between September 2021 and the midterms; he didn’t have the former president on once. Mr. Rufo, meanwhile, was advising the governor on how to combat liberal teaching about race and gender in Florida’s schools.
At Mr. Carlson’s Maine redoubt, Mr. Trump Jr. never brought up his father or Mr. DeSantis or the presidential campaign. But Mr. Rufo assumed that was “the subtext of the visit” — that Mr. Trump Jr. was there...

For sure.
The problem we have is our nation’s problems right now are due to some kind of conspiracy which has been placing agents all through government, who fear it and will serve it.
I hate to say it but Vance is likely one of them, based on his career following the pattern - no real accomplishments, and out of the blue a book deal drops on him and the media promotes the book to the top of the charts. I assume whatever this competing clique is has wrangled control of Vance, bt with agents, that is never permanent. They serve interests, and not greater causes.
I know all this because I got into politics, and this whole intel op showed up in my life, and I assume they were just trying to drive me out because I am the type which would never bend the knee to them, and indeed, resent them even being in this country.
At this point, the only chance I think you have to keep that thing at bay is the Trump family. The next primary will be swarming with its agents, all looking to return the party to the party of the Bushes.
I have not see Don Jr run a campaign from the top, but I know he and Eric are the best shots at maintaining what the big guy is trying to do now.
Vance is still a question mark in my mind. After all, he was allowed into Mitch McConnell’s rinopublican Senate. He’s an Ivy League graduate from a very left wing college and until recently a never-Trump.
One of the GOP’s favorite tricks is the creation of these faux-conservative “Firebrands”. They seem to roll a new one out every election season. He may be the exception. He may not. Time will tell.
Agreed. Very good communicator. She’s smart and unflappable.
I hope that you are wrong but anything is possible. If Vance is “one of them” then he would be the most amazing liar ever. He explains and defends Trump’s positions better than anyone. I especially like watching his handling of the propaganda press.
Vance is 8 and 12
“I hate to say it but Vance is likely one of them”
My nephew, who is around 48 years old, is generally a thoughtful and insightful person. I was surprised when he said he’s still not sure about Vance. I wasn’t on board with JDV at first, then was won over, but now I wonder. I hope he’s not going to be a Pence II.
A sound and safe idea indeed.
LOL!!! The GREEN MONSTER strikes again!
Both Don Jr. and Eric need more experience—Let one of them become Governor of New York or Mayor—get some kudos for fixing things then move on—Eric is a better speaker. A Trump needs to head the movement even if its symbolic. How about Vance and Eric Trump in 2028?
Formerly Mrs. Gavin Newsome.
THAT IS “ANY THREESOME NEWSOM”, PLEASE.
RUMORS in CALIF were that was the reason she left him.
Don Jr’s mother Ivanka had not yet become a citizen when he, Ivanka and Eric were born. Didn’t matter with Obama, but the left will suddently “discover” the importance of the Constitution if any of the older Trump children would run. Barron was born 5-1/2 months before his mother Melania became a citizen; so he, too is not technically eligible.
The only Trump child with two U.S.-born parents is Tiffany. I wouldn’t count her out. She was educated at UPenn (Ivy League) and Georgetown Law, is married to a billionaire, and has had a great practical political education watching what has been done by, and to, her father. She will be 43 in 2036.
That said, after living through the Kennedy and Bush dynasties, I don’t think dynastic presidencies are a great idea. Senators, Representatives, Governors presidential advisors or cabinet members, maybe; but no more Trump presidents.
Nah. Doesn't seem to like little boys.
I had that experience when I was young, dumb, and rebelling against the Establishment in the 1970s. I was busy with work and didn't follow politics, so I thought the ACLU was a nice bunch of folks helping our black neighbors get better treatment.
Then I got a fund-raising letter in the mail from ACLU listing all the things they were against and wanting to take down: the First and Second Amendments, the Boy Scouts, the laws around traditional marriage and parenthood, etc.
That card was the absolute turning point. I abandoned liberalism on the spot.
There is that. It seems that Pence has been relatively silent this campaign. Or maybe I’m not watching the right (wrong?) places.
I’m not sure I’m 100% trusting in JDV. But if his personality and debating skills can get PDJT over the finish line, I’m happy. If he starts getting funky later on, he can be replaced. Someone needs to keep a close eye on him, though.
I joined the ACLU myself long ago thinking they were Libertarians.
Found out pretty quickly that they were not.
He was a traitor to MAGA and sided with the Romney-McCain-McConnell-Bushies against the People.
