NATIONAL MOLDY CHEESE DAY

National Moldy Cheese Day is a unique holiday that is observed each year on October 9 that celebrates delicious cheeses.

#MoldyCheeseDay

A cheesemonger is a person who specializes in cheeses, butter, and other dairy products. They may take umbrage at the ordinary person's offense of moldy cheese. Well, depending on the type of mold, of course. Some cheese molds, red or brown-tinged molds, for example, are offensive. Toss those bacteria-contaminated moldy cheeses in the garbage quickly and move along to the grey, blue, or green colored moldy cheeses in the fridge instead.

Like a sommelier pairs the best wines with meals, a cheesemonger provides expert advice on artisan cheeses for recipes, banquets, and sources for restaurants. Cheeses such as Maytag blue, Roquefort, bleu, camembert, gorgonzola, and Stilton are a few of the moldy reasons cheese lovers celebrate on this day.

Moldy cheese gets such colorful phrases. For example, the fuzzy mold on a wheel of fresh brie is called cats fur. These bloomy rind cheeses take some careful maintenance. However, the results are satisfying. Isn't the best food is a bit of a science experiment, anyway?

Gorgonzola cheese is made with three different kinds of mold spores. It's like a milder blue cheese, but gorgonzola is creamier and earthier. Toss it with pasta and mushrooms for an outstanding meal. Also, it compliments any cheese plate. Add apples and tart, dried cranberries.

HOW TO OBSERVE MOLDY CHEESE DAY

Stop by a local deli or chat with your favorite cheesemonger about a uniquely moldy cheese. Other ways to celebrate the day include:

Invite friends for a tasting

Clean out your fridge. You might find some moldy cheese.

Try a moldy cheese you've never tried before. Is Stilton something new to you? Try it!

Share your recipes using moldy cheeses.

After our exchange the other day I went and counted.

Not including condiments, sauces, or soups that contain cheese, but counting flavored varieties individually, I had 17 types of cheese in the frig.

Heres your excuse to go get some more.

My husband does too! When we have chicken wings, he loves his bleu cheese dressing. I don’t make that. I use the Litehouse brand for him. Now, ranch dressing I can make myself.

Haha, I beat you! I just counted 18 different kinds. (I bought more cotija just the other day.) That’s not including the already shredded varieties, or the cream cheeses. Like you, I’m not counting soup, condiments, or sauces with cheese.

I didn’t see anything moldy beyond Blue cheese at the County Fair. They have one cooler dedicated to cheeses and all the local dairies submit a huge block of the stuff for judging. Wish I had taken a picture; all Blue and Red (second) ribbons in that case!

This year I won a Blue Ribbon for my photography, and a Red for my crocheted afghan, and due to the fact that I had not labeled some things properly, I only got Thirds on my canned goods. (’Participation Ribbons,’ LOL!) BUT - now I know what to do for next year.

It cost me $30 to enter everything, but I got $10 back. Seed money for next Fair Season. ;)

I used to own a big old Victorian home in Watertown, WI. 'The Octagon House' was a few blocks over from my house.

And in addition to those Prize Ribbons you have our "Blue Ribbon" for hosting the F/R Gardening Thread!

Here is one one of your neighbors in Mineral point. Bet she had a cheese in the basket!

Julie Hook of Hook’s Cheese Company–Mineral Point, WI

"College sweethearts Julie and Tony Hook own Hook’s Cheese Company, and while Tony was the one who started making cheese, it was Julie who first won awards. Her Colby cheese won the “Best in Class” award at the World Cheese Championship contest in 1982, and also the overall “World Champion Award.” She is still the only woman to ever win the latter. Visit Hook’s Cheese Company in Mineral Point, Wisconsin, buy online, or find Julie at the Dane County Farmers’ Market in Madison. (And trust me, the 15-year cheddar will change your life)."
