An elderly pedophile was found dead in his cell inside a California prison with his cellmate now under investigation for his murder.
Mark Squires, 70, was found unresponsive around 3:30 pm on Tuesday by San Quentin prison staff after an alarm was sounded, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) said in a statement.
Emergency services were immediately called and 'lifesaving measures' were performed on the prisoner, who was imprisoned for lewd acts on a child under the age of 14.
Squires was transported to the prison triage area, where medical staff - who were not associated with the prison - declared him dead at 4:04 pm.
His cellmate, Gustavo Lopez, 36, was whisked away and placed in restrictive housing, where he will remain while the prison performs an investigation into the mysterious death.
Prison staff did not reveal how Squires' body was found or what injuries he suffered that led to his death in the alleged homicide.
No other inmates or officers were injured, according to CDCR.
Seventeen inmates' deaths have been ruled a homicide across the state's prisons this year from January to August, according to CDCR data.
Twenty-five inmates died in custody from various causes in August alone, with a total of nearly 250 since January.

Awwww....
A locked-room mystery.

It doesn’t happen enough.
Absolutely sick.
Wr live in a sick world where we cheer inmates when they torture and kill inmates that we as a society don’t have the courage to punish ethically.
And cheering freepers are just sick.
For this is about the law and ethics
So sad
Then how do they know it was a violent end?
For pedophiles I agree.
But I am guessing most of that 250 inmates were not pedophiles.
Someone imprisoned for car theft should expect to serve his time and come out alive at the end and unmolested.
This is to be expected now that we are becoming a third world country. Also to be expected, more assassinations of political opponents, more rogue judges and corrupt DAs.
“It’s a Republic if you can keep it.”
Boo hoo hoo…yawn
Apparently, the sadly deceased didn’t rape your young daughter.
Was he vaxxed?
sick as in cool?
You make an interesting point. Laws and ethics matter. But it is the job of the judicial system to do the right thing. When the system fails completely, vigilantes will spring up.
The vigilante might be an angry parent. Or the corner grocer. Or a pervert’s cell mate.
When is a vigilante morally justified for what he does? That’s a hard call. But I will say this. What happened to the pervert here will perhaps dissuade some other pervert from acting on his impulses.
That’s not a bad thing.
Let the guy out on parole, he did a public service.
When I was at San Quentin, and I am sure the same thing applies today, they might have been conducting a mandatory standing count. If the inmate won’t stand up, staff will think something is wrong, and will find out why. It’s at count time, where many things are discovered.
Unless he pissed off someone on the street, and justice was administered behind bars. You'd be surprised how many street grudges end up being resolved behind bars. Criminals will wait years to get even with someone, and will get the job done if possible behind bars. I worked 25 years in uniform in NY State's prison system and saw it in real time. One case while I was at Auburn prison in the early 80's that I'll never forget was a tall, good looking black kid name Molyneaux who had his throat slit in his cell because of some crap that went down in the streets. I don't know if they ever caught the perp. Tried to do a search but came up empty-handed, but did find an article about a fracas at Auburn prison just 9 days ago:
Inmate attacks lead to multiple injuries at Auburn Correctional Facility
I'm one of the lucky ones who lived to retire. The co-workers that died during my career, died from terminal illnesses, heart attacks, strokes, accidents, and suicide. Most were younger than me. I'm a 77 year old female. Only worked in male prisons. Was only assaulted twice in all the years I worked in the job. Both times very mild...no loss of time. Retired as a Sergeant in 2003. Decent pension and benefits. It was getting bad inside when I retired. Can't even imagine what it's like now. Governor Hochul is closing at least 5, if not 6 more prisons this year. That means more convicts out on the street before their sentences are done.
Most probably were not, but prison politics are different. There are many things that can get them killed. Drug debts, thefts, disrespect, racial hatred. The Surenos and Nortenos have been fighting (allegedly) for 70 years, over a pair of tennis shoes. It’s a whole different world.
Freepers don’t even think about those that might die while they are in there for other reasons. Like say refusing to answer questions for a democrat J6 law fare committee. There is a real problem when that many people are being murdered in prison.
