Lotus teases a new sports car ahead of its reveal next week, and it's likely a concept that previews the upcoming Type 135 EV.
* Lotus is teasing a new sports car called the Theory 1 that will be unveiled on September 16.
* The Theory 1 appears to be electric and is likely a concept car that will hint at the Type 135 sports car that will arrive in the next few years.
* The teaser videos show an active rear spoiler and a rectangular yoke-style steering wheel.
While Lotus still sells the enthralling gas-powered Emira sports car with a manual transmission, the brand has begun exploring new territory with the electric Eletre SUV and Emeya sedan. Now, Lotus seems to be combining its newfound interest in electric powertrains with its roots in sports cars, teasing a new vehicle that will be unveiled next week. Called the Theory 1, the car appears to feature futuristic design cues and might be a concept previewing the brand's Type 135 electric sports car that is due in the next few years.
The teaser campaign has consisted of three videos posted on social media, each with a different title: "Digital," "Natural," and "Analogue," spelling out "DNA." In Analogue, Lotus shows the side profile of vintage Formula 1 cars before providing a look at the Theory 1's rear end, which appears to taper to a thin LED taillight with an active spoiler that raises up.
Lotus gone all-electric. Emira will be last ICE Lotus.
Refueling will be interesting. F1 cars currently use a little bit of hybrid technology assist to extend their range. Some of that technology is found in the Pacifica from Chrysler. It’s interesting stuff. Far from an EV but increasingly hybrid.
The first Tesla Roadster was based on the Lotus Elise.
Thus endeth Lotus. Had been thinking about an older Evora for quite a while, but this move, announced a couple years back, was a huge turnoff for both practical and personal reasons. So I bought a new Corvette. Quite a lot to be said for high-compression, normally aspirated small block Chevy engine, and the damned thing puts a huge smile on my face every time I take it out (which is alot more frequently than I’d thought would be the case...). An ICE Lotus would be nice too, but I’ve ZERO interest high performance EV’s (driven a few Teslas). The tech is amazing (if overwhelming), but they’re not sports cars.
Emira...Eletre...Emeya - sound Emasculated.
Emetic..........
EVs are refueled by electric charging. Lotus does not compete in F1. It’s official: No more Lotus ICE or hybrid cars after Emira.
(Hat tip to Jeremy Clarkson)
“F1 cars currently use a little bit of hybrid technology assist to extend their range. “
In a F1 vehicle the 1.6 liter V6 internal combustion engine (ICE) makes about 700 HP. The hybrid system of electric power adds an additional 160 HP that can be used for up to 33 seconds per lap.
There is MASSIVE technology included in the hybrid engineering which doesn’t so much ‘extend their range’ as increase acceleration for shorter lap times and/or add a boost while passing an opponent.

An electic sports car is the vehicular equivalent of light beer.
Might as well call it "CONCEPT 1". That's been popular over the years for all kinds of things.
How about "LAME-BRAINED IDEA 1"? That fits....
My sports car days are way past, but if I were still interested, it would have to be a car with a throaty, angry sound of a V-8.
Yep!
Like dating a Super Model.
Lots of drama, usually expensive.
Okay, so we have #6 driving a Lotus 7. How cool is that!?
The Theory comes pre-debunked.
