People who eat just two servings of red meat per week may have an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes compared to people who eat fewer servings, and the risk increases with greater consumption, according to a new study led by researchers from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. They also found that replacing red meat with healthy plant-based protein sources, such as nuts and legumes, or modest amounts of dairy foods, was associated with reduced risk of type 2 diabetes.
The study was published on Thursday, October 19, in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
“Our findings strongly support dietary guidelines that recommend limiting the consumption of red meat, and this applies to both processed and unprocessed red meat,” said first author Xiao Gu, postdoctoral research fellow in the Department of Nutrition.
While previous studies have found a link between red meat consumption and type 2 diabetes risk, this study, which analyzed a large number of type 2 diabetes cases among participants being followed for an extended period of years, adds a greater level of certainty about the association.
Type 2 diabetes rates are increasing rapidly in the U.S. and worldwide. This is concerning not only because the disease is a serious burden, but it also is a major risk factor for cardiovascular and kidney disease, cancer, and dementia.
For this study, the researchers analyzed health data from 216,695 participants from the Nurses’ Health Study (NHS), NHS II, and Health Professionals Follow-up Study (HPFS). Diet was assessed with food frequency questionnaires every two to four years, for up to 36 years. During this time, more than 22,000 participants developed type 2 diabetes.
The researchers found that consumption of red meat, including processed and unprocessed red meat, was strongly associated with increased risk of type 2 diabetes. Participants who ate the most red meat had a 62% higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes compared to those who ate the least. Every additional daily serving of processed red meat was associated with a 46% greater risk of developing type 2 diabetes and every additional daily serving of unprocessed red meat was associated with a 24% greater risk.
The researchers also estimated the potential effects of substituting one daily serving of red meat for another protein source. They found that substituting a serving of nuts and legumes was associated with a 30% lower risk of type 2 diabetes, and substituting a serving of dairy products was associated with a 22% lower risk.
“Given our findings and previous work by others, a limit of about one serving per week of red meat would be reasonable for people wishing to optimize their health and wellbeing,” said senior author Walter Willett, professor of epidemiology and nutrition.
In addition to health benefits, swapping red meat for healthy plant protein sources would help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and climate change, and provide other environmental benefits, according to the researchers.
Other Harvard Chan School authors included Frank Sacks and Frank Hu.
The NHS, NHS II, and HPFS are supported by the National Institute of Health (grants UM1 CA186107, U01 CA176726, and U01 CA167552).

Amen.
Diabetes type 2 has only 1 cause. Snacking frequently which leads to insulin resistance. Eating too much red meat combined with sedentary lifetyle will lead to other cardiovascular issues, not necessarily Diabetes type 2. Of course lots of red meat can lead to obesity which can also lead to diabetes.
Yep. I’m no scientist and I’m going to freely admit that I didn’t even read the full article, let alone try to dig into their research and references and I’m just dismissing it out of hand. Looks like utter propaganda BS on it’s face.
It has to be deceptive, at it’s very least, if not totally fraudulent.
If someone consumed ONLY red meat (which I would not advise, even as someone who is currently keto), there is absolutely no way they would go type2 diabetic.
However, if you ate lots of carbs and sugars, and threw in some steaks once in a while, sure!
But that’s complete deception. It’s not the red meat that does it. It’s all the other dietary mistakes. Having a steak once in a while doesn’t reverse them.
That’s as deceptive as the old cerial commercials from yor, when they used to say “Part of this complete nutritious breakfast” and they would show a table full of fruits and vegetables and orange juice and eggs and sausage, etc. The cereal has virtually nothing to do with the nutrition except empty calories. It’s pure deception.
Remember Harvard’s studies — funded by the sugar lobby — of the health benefits of sugar compated to fats.
“About the only thing that everyone has consistently agreed on is no refined sugar or high fructose corn syrup.”
Right.
Wasn’t aware of that.
“With sugar — for energy!”
Great feedback, thanks.
I think it’s propaganda. They’ll start by pushing manufactured plant-based meat and end up advocating the consumption of bugs. The WEF says ‘You’ll have nothing, and like it.”
You must eat zee bugz to save the planet
Was thinking the same thing—bugs.
Define keto diets then.
They want to shut down cattle farming because global warming.
As I replied on this article previously, Junk Science.
The push to make red meat a villain never ends.
Consume HFCS and/or sugar on a regular basis without regular exercise and I will guarantee you a Type 2 ticket in your future.
Red meat has nothing to do with type 2 diabetes. This propaganda has one purpose, which is to paint red meat in a bad light.
The upside is, perhaps more idiots who buy into this nonsense will consume less beef, thus hopefully lowering the price of beef in the future.
I can always hope!
It's all about carbs and sugars (which are carbs), and combination of medicine that works for your body chemistry and lifestyle.
If you become fat with too many carbs/sugars in your blood stream, you are susceptible to developing Type II.
Red meat has no carbs, unless laced with sugar/honey/etc.
Again, this is propaganda to get animal protein out of your diet. Animal protein--in reasonable portions--makes one physically strong, mentally alert, and emotionally impenetrable.
Serious animal protein deprivation is a classic tool for cults to control people.
Why wouldn't a nefarious government use the same tactic to control its people?
This sounds like a propaganda study, funded by bug-pushing WEF types...
I’m 73 today and have eaten substantial levels of red meat my whole life and my blood sugars are fine and I’m not diabetic. My 47-year-old niece on the other hand loves pasta, potatoes and white rice dishes and has been diabetic for at least 20 years now.
I’ll keep earing me hamburgers and steaks.
Still, drinking too much beer is also bad...especially one brand in particular...
I am on a Carnivore diet. No carbs, and mostly meat and animal proteins. I am Type Ii, and I’m doing my best to get and keep my blood glucose levels lowered without medications or insulin shots. It is working, albeit slowly. I’m sticking with it, even though I’ve had to completely cut out stuff I like...including beer.
I’d rather give up stuff I like rater than my sight, my feet, or my life.
Harvard has it ass backwards again. This is the kind of science they do now.
