I have a question for LINUX users:
We ran updates for LINUX last night, and when I turned on the computer this morning, I had no sound. It doesn't seem to be a problem with the speakers, and my Bluetooth ear buds are still getting sound when I listen to various YT sites; but nothing is coming out of the computer/speakers otherwise.
Has anyone experienced this? We have Mint, I think it's 21. We have never had an issue like this.
Thanks to anyone who has time to respond.
Could the connections be damaged?
My husband checked, and that doesn’t seem to be the problem.
Sometimes when we’ve run updates, the next day a correction comes down; we’re kind of waiting to see if that happens again...
(The one thing we haven’t tried is sticking ear plugs directly into the speakers; I’ll try that and get back.)
It happens some times with me and I just go to settings-—blutooth- and I needed to re connect the missing speakers. Very simple.
If you have a spare set of speakers, try using those to see if it works. The sound card and software seem to work since they are working through your ear phones.
Don’t have a spare set; but I tried plugging regular old ear buds into the speakers, and no sound.
Thanks; we’ll try that.
Ping!..............
Speaking of linux ...
I got an android phone with the Lineage O/S
I am plagued with some auto function changing my type.
I type ‘pir’ and then a space and it changes to ‘pit’
I want lower case ‘btw’ but am forced to look at ALL CAPS
‘BTW’
How do I turn this crap off ?
The update possibly didn’t connect to the audio driver. Go to the user forums for the type Linux and post a question on how to recover/install/reinstall that driver.
system settings/hardware/sound. Check to see if the correct output device you need is picked as default as primary. If you are using an external 3rd party device the update may have returned this setting back to default PC speakers.
Also check to see if it is muted or the sound has been turned down.
But first, check your keyboard controls to make sure the mute/volume keys were not accidentally pressed by the cat... Might just be the keyboard button options preventing it. The keyboard is another entity of it’s own with options that override software settings. :)
Linux sound is notoriously tricky. Which audio system are you using? Pulseaudio has many features but is complex and easily messed-up. You typically need to use pavucontrol to see which sources are making sound and which output devices are enabled. It kinda sucks.
Well, I tried plugging plain old ear plugs into the speakers, and that doesn’t work either. So, it could be a problem with the speaker connections even though it doesn’t seem so.
(We don’t have Bluetooth speakers; ours are plugged directly into the sound card.)
We’ll try your suggestion, Fai Mao.
This isn’t crucial - my cheap little Bluetooth ear buds still work. Thanks for everyone’s suggestions - this is husband’s busy time at work, but we’ll be able to solve it after tomorrow. We’ve just never experienced it before; for over ten years, Linux has been great for us, without a single problem.
Hold comma key and settings appear
this did it
Or go to an online discounter like Walmart.com, Temu, etc and buy a cheap pair of Bluetooth speakers?
Changing the output device doesn’t seem to make a difference. Bluetooth works, speakers don’t.
(What can I do on the keyboard? I’m not aware of any ‘mute/volume actions that may have happened, cat involvement or not.)
I’ve never needed them. Everything has worked fine, until this morning...
This command gets sound working when it stops on Linux Mint for me.
pactl set-card-profile 0 output:hdmi-stereo
I run Fedora rather than Mint, but I have found Pulse Audio Volume Control in Multimedia helpful. I think alsamixer run in the terminal can give more control, but it is tricky to use.
