Gail Collins: Bret! Does that mean you’re going to vote for her? I was planning on torturing you until you joined the team.

Bret: I’m not there yet, though the rumored choice of Josh Shapiro, the Pennsylvania governor, as her running mate would go far to reassure me about a Harris administration. What do you think?

Gail: Certainly seems to make sense politically — guy from a very important state, with a moderate image that might reassure Democrats who are worried that Harris is too far to the left.

But Bret, can I take one minute to register a big howl about the fact that in a presidential election one vote in Pennsylvania is worth a trillion times more than one vote in, um, New York?

Nobody’s arguing that Shapiro is the best conceivable candidate in the country; he’s just maybe the best conceivable candidate from a critical swing state.

Bret: What else is new? In this case, there would be the happy blending of a terrific candidate who happens to govern a must-win state. I also think Harris recognizes that she needs to temper the perception of her being a Bay Area progressive politician by choosing a governor with a reputation for centrism. It makes for a good contrast to Trump-Vance, where old-and-crazy chose to pair up with young-and-reckless.

Gail: Well, governmentally speaking, I’d be happiest with a vice-presidential candidate who was of the same progressive bent as Harris. But I’ve got to admit that the smartest strategy is to pick somebody who makes the ticket...

I just saw a campaign ad of hers where she says:

I will work for working Americans. People should only have to work one job to pay the bills....

I was yelling at the TV:

The Democrats forced everyone into part-time work!!!

Doesn't she know that Obamacare killed the 40-hour work week? Doesn't she know that Obamacare defined "full time workers" as everyone working 30+ hours a week to make small businesses provide health care benefits, so the businesses slashed everyone's hours to 29 per week to get around that mandate?

Doesn't she know that people now had to work two or three part-time jobs (with no benefits) just to get back to what they used to have before Obamacare?

I hope the Trump campaign hammers her on this issue.

She isn’t Biden. I use my daughter’s Arts and Academia friends (She is a professor) to gauge the liberal side. What I am seeing is that most of them hated Biden. Mostly because he was old, and more recently because of the Middle East. Now, those people who were NOT voting for Biden have come out strong for Harris. Mostly because she isn’t Trump nor Biden.

In the long run it’s not going to change much because those people would cut off both their hands before voting R. Of course, with a few trillion cut out of the wealth today, thats gonna impact their charitable funding. They should’ve think all that.
