Killer whales sink $128K yacht in ‘terrifying’ 2-hour Mediterranean Sea attack: ‘Like watching wolves hunt’
New York Post ^ | July 26, 2024 | Katherine Donlevy

Orcas relentlessly battered a yacht in a “terrifying” two-hour attack that didn’t end until the $128,680 vessel sunk to the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea.

...

they were not playing at all, they knew exactly what they were doing. They knew the weak points of the boat, and they knew how to sink it...

“Their sole intention was to sink the boat

...

The five orcas circled the 39-foot sailing boat and took turns smashing it to bits .. in a coordinated assault Powell compared to the carnage of wolves.

...

The pod of five first focused on the rudder, rendering the sailboat unable to steer after about 15 hits.

...

“They were circling. It was like watching wolves hunt,

...

Though they were just two miles off the coast of Spain — and the crew radioed for help as soon as the attack began — it took two hours before help arrived.

A Spanish salvage vessel fortunately helped them abandon the stricken ship, minutes before it sunk 130 feet below the Mediterranean’s surface.

...

he tried everything from dropping firecrackers in the water and turning off the engine to deter the attack, but the pod was determined.

“It was a very long attack, and it was really the violence of the attack that surprised me

...

the same group responsible for terrorizing other skippers in European waters in recent years.

...

In May, a pack of killer whales sank a 50-foot yacht in Moroccan waters after repeatedly slamming into the vessel.

Orcas also interfered with a sailing race last year

...

“It’s only a matter of time before someone shoots one of these killer whales

...

The fight between man and beast is going to get worse. Luckily none of us were in the water or got hurt.

“They knew what they were doing. They knew the weak points of the boat.” This sounds straight out of “Jaws.”

Yep. Kill-em! Remove the threat to shipping (or pleasure sailing). They will repeat this learned behavior. They must be punished!!!!!

PETA Trolling!

They are toothed whales but whales is the correct word.

They actually are called Killer Whales because they attack and eat other whales.

No. They are dolphins. You are misinformed. Orcas are the largest member of the dolphin family.

Why are orcas called ‘killer whales’ when they are dolphins?
Dolphins and whales are closely related. Orcas were given the name ‘killer whale’ by ancient sailors’ observations of groups of orcas hunting and preying on larger whale species. They called orcas ballena asesina, or ‘killer whale.’ Their Latin name, Orcinus orca, also reflects this observation of orcas feeding on large whales. Orcinus translates to ‘of the kingdom of the dead,’ and orca refers to a kind of whale. We know that orcas are top predators, yes, but not the vicious ‘whale killers’ that the ancient mariners thought them to be. If you could give orcas another name, what would you call them?

Those are killer dolphins, not whales. They are from the dolphin family.

Orcas are dolphins, but they have been nicknamed "killer whales" for a very long time, most likely since before it was determined that they were, in fact, in the dolphin family.

Do NOT shoot the whales. The water is their home. And they’re very smart. Angry about intruders.

No clue how to negotiate with them.

I’ve heard they’re pretty smart. They don’t attack a human’s bot unless they are doing it on purpose.

Whales are divided into two suborders, baleen whales and toothed whales.

Killer Whales are toothed whales.

So are Dolphins.

So are Beaked Whales.

So are the Porpoise.

All toothed whales.

Sounds like a cheap yacht. Maybe just a BOAT?

I don't know who said it but it's true:

"A boat is a hole in the water you pour money into."

It’s not that I want to kill whales, like I hate the fact that Japan and China still hunt them. But from what I understand with this situation, there is one or two pods of killer whales out in the Mediterranean that are deliberately sinking boats. It seems like it’s only getting worse. So with that in mine, we might want to think about eliminating them before this behavior expands outside the small group of graphically collocated killer whales Because think about it if this behavior eventually expanse to all pods killer whales, we are basically not going to be able to take boats into the ocean anymore unless they’re bigger than 50 feet

Yep, they should kill off that entire pod. I don’t think it’s happening any other place but off the coast there.

Killer whales are from the dolphin 🐬 (Delphinidae) family. Whales 🐋 are divided into four families: Balaenopteridae, Balaenidae, Cetotheriidae, and Eschrichtiidae.

It’s time to start calling them killer dolphins.

This might not have happened if the boat had been powered by fossil fuels rather than wind.

Because orcas only can make 30 knots, and that only for a short sprint. If the boat had had a couple of 600-hp Mercury V-12s outboards bolted on the transom, they could have made 35 knots and just motored away from them.

Don’t forget, the Pequod ran on wind, too, and look what happened to her!
