Something less serious - is today's NFL safe to watch?
My struggling brain | 7/26/2024 | Me

Posted on 07/26/2024 11:24:54 AM PDT by freedumb2003

I have not watched an NFL game for 7+ years. I started to try to watch it but still there was too much woke crap.

I do play NFL Pro Era on my Quest headset and I love.

Understand: before kaperdink I LOVED the NFL. I am one of those guys who digs deep into strategy and tactics and know the difference between the two.

I hear the NFL as cleaned up its act and is not allowing any of the nonsense they used to do but I have no way of knowing.

One last note - pre kaperdink I *lived* for the NFL. I did not go to a college with football and I never much cared the college game.

I want to hear from Fellow Freeper Football Fans. Is it worth it to go back in?

The NFL is the most popular sport on television because of gambling and with more and more states legalizing sports gambling the NFL will continue to be extremely popular.

I actually think college football is in worse shape than the NFL, I read this week that Washington which played for the national championship last season lost their coach to Alabama and the new coach said they’re 46 new scholarship players on the team this year, considering college teams can only have 85 players on scholarship, over 50% of the players were turned over in one year at a team playing for the national championship last year

Why ruin a perfect record — Find a sport that gives YOU exercise instead.

Yea, they didn’t realize I’d find other stuff to do on Sunday afternoons.

I enjoy the NFL. A lot of Freepers think it is one step down from the Communist Party but a lot of FReeprs are VERY reactionary.

Yes, the NFL has gone woke in many ways but there is also a “woke-backlash” afoot. I think all this “woke’ leftist nonsense is unsustainable and will die out.

In the meantime, I just focus on the games, the talent, and the strengths and weaknesses of each team in the matchup, especially in the playoffs.

I like the playoffs because I’m able to gather a season’s worth of stats and incorporate them into my team rankings and expected winners. Been doing that since the 80’s and my overall prediction rate is around 60%, which is better than most pundits I’ve seen.

Have fun and remember, FR has it’s own NFL thread by Impy. I’ll copy Impy on this post and you can let him know if you want to be on the NFL ping list.

After watching since the 50’s I stopped watching when the Broncos last won the Super Bowl. The game itself has become uninteresting for multiple reasons in no particular order:

The players are constantly looking for self-aggrandizing kill-shot plays instead of team play. I get the feeling more air-time is spent celebrating than playing.
Too many commercials and game interruptions.
Way too much referee air-time. It’s a referees’ game now, not a players’ game. Too many explanations, replays, penalties etc. 3+ hours with 10 minutes of actual football is a bad joke.
Free agency sucked from the get-go and still does.

There are too many more entertaining ways to spend 3 hours than watching big steroid-enhanced guys running into each other and celebrating every tackle like they did something fantastic.

That’s a long-winded way to say pro football is boring now. If people still find it enjoyable, by all means watch it, nothing wrong with that. That means less people in the parks and on the roadways.

The only controversy is the refs potentially fixing the games.

Gambling is everywhere now. So that bothers me. I don't care about politics. The NFL is not that bad about that. Kaepernick is out of the league now.

But the games are fixed. So what's the point for me to watch the NFL on tv?

“The only controversy is the refs potentially fixing the games.”

I think the players do more fixing than the refs.

>> Dallas still sucks<<

I can forgive the NFL for kaperdink and one stupid season. I will *NEVER* forgive jones and the ‘girls for taking a knee.

I am here in D and root against them. The last 3 seasons have been particularly satisfying. The crestfallen expressions after “this is our year FOR SURE” are pure gold.

The funny thing about the “da GAMEZ are RIGGED so I’m not watchin’ da gamez” argument….

….is that it’s being made on a conservative political forum by folks who vote.

Wait until game is over, go to youtube, click (team) (date) highlights, and watch the entire game that's worth watching in 10 to 12 minutes.

I've been doing it for YEARS and it satisfies my NFL jones.

I watch some. But I do catch the game synopses every Sunday on Youtube;;;12-15 minutes each...all the highlights and no woke bs. Good way for me to keep up with who’s who. If I need to see more I can hunt up some longer game vids.

I have also been watching Netflix’s Receiver, highlighting the 2023 season of George Kittle, Davante Adams, Justin Jefferson, Deebo Samuels and Amon Ra St. Brown. There are parts about off field life and family but the in game mic-ed up intensity is as good as the old NFL films. Some of the hits those guys take are unreal.

If you have not watched, the game is noticeably different. There might be some BLM crap stenciled in the end zone or on the back of a helmet but the NFL has learned a lesson in keeping their bs off the field for the most part. They mouth the same blithering blather but the game is pretty much left along.
IMHO

No TV for me...why ingest visual/verbal propaganda puke?

Doing so only accomplishes what "the master" wants you to do....make/keep you sick and stupid.

I enjoy watching the NFL. It is ENTERTAINMENT. That is all.

It is the only reason left to tune into network television.
Now that I no longer PAY for cable TV I stream the games on the CBS or NBC streaming channels. I pay for YouTube(Oh My God they are owned by Alphabet) and I pay for Netflix (another liberally owned entertainment venue).

I also spent an over an hour watching Tucker interview Ben Carson on YouTube. Then read a few chapters in the latest Reacher novel.

I discovered that last season for the first time. It is especially great for Monday, Thursday and Sunday night football. Which are all on past my bedtime.
