New quantum microscope shows electrons moving in slow motion

Physicists at the University of Stuttgart, led by Professor Sebastian Loth, have developed a groundbreaking quantum microscope that can record the movement of electrons at the atomic level with incredibly high spatial and temporal resolution.

This new method could significantly advance the way scientists develop materials. Their findings have been published in the journal Nature Physics.

“With our new method, we can see things that no one has ever seen before,” says Prof. Loth, the Managing Director of the Institute for Functional Matter and Quantum Technologies at the University of Stuttgart.

“This allows us to answer questions about electron movements in solids that have puzzled scientists since the 1980s.”

The practical implications of this research are substantial, particularly for creating new materials.

If we can see them, we might be able to control them.

Only subject to the uncertainty principle.

Heisenberg couldn’t make up his mind.
At least he didn’t kill cats.

Referring to Schoedinger (sp?) I like cats. As Rush said:

Worked at Intel for a while in the 70’s.

They’re tired.

They just have jetlag.

They have COVID-19.

They probably didn’t create a way to take video from that microscope yet. It will be interesting when they do, however.

“Only subject to the uncertainty principle.”

They don’t “see” the electron. They measure the wave function which then gives the electron position probability.

Says they look at the movement of the electric collective....clearly not a “single” electron.
I wonder if an atomic force microscope could measure the effect of a single electron going through matter. My guess there are relativistic considerations made to calculate the motion, and recording, and saving the electron velocity and position information. Paging Dr. Heisenberg....Dr. Einstein...

“I wonder if an atomic force microscope could measure the effect of a single electron going through matter.”

Atomic force microscopes are not even close in resolution to the above technology.

The inherent wave nature of reality makes pin pointing electrons a bizarre task. Just where is an ocean wave exactly, for example. Once you remove nearly all heat you get a strange state of matter called an Einstein-Bose condensate . Everything we thought of as particles becomes part if a mass wave. It is this ultimate wave nature of reality that makes the speed of light as fast as things get.
