‘It's just a nightmare’: More and more USAA members who lost thousands of dollars are sharing their stories of fraud — say they’ve now lost trust in the bank

Curtis Murrah says he’d been a loyal customer with USAA for 28 years — until his wife rang him up one day saying she couldn’t make their mortgage payment because there wasn’t any money in their account.

Murrah, who’s based in Georgia, says he took a closer look at his accounts and discovered someone was making deposits in and out of his accounts.

“It was like they were playing mind games,” he told News 4 San Antonio. “They would deposit $9,800 then turn right around and withdraw $9,800. They would deposit $4,000, turn right around and withdrew it.”

Murrah contacted USAA and convinced the institution to conduct an investigation — but USAA allegedly told him there was no evidence of fraud, despite a $14,174 loss across two of his accounts, including his emergency savings. Then, the bank unexpectedly closed his account.

News 4 San Antonio organized a video call with several USAA members who lost funds due to fraud — and have been left with little to no recourse. Some of them also belong to the Facebook group, USAA Fraud and Victims, which has 2,900 members.

A few USAA members even reported being asked by the institution to cover the negative balances on their accounts after their money was stolen.

“It's just a nightmare that you’d be treated that way and disrespected,” says Tiffany Tienda, another USAA customer who lost about $3,700 to fraud. “It’s emotionally and mentally draining and offensive that they’re so dismissive of the whole situation.”

USAA has been going down hill as it seems military officers no longer control the company.

In 2019 when my dad died my sister, his executor, was told by USAA he had no money coming, he didn't use any USAA banking. I told her BS, there are subscriber funds. USAA would not acknowledge anything to either of us. They said she needed a new power of attorney to get information. I finally get hold of a manager that said the will designating her the executor was required. Provided that and they finally talked to her and acknowledged he had over $5K in the subscriber account, took over a month to get it.

USAA had a major facility in Colorado Springs. It was known years ago to be a diversity-hiring mess.

I’m a 46 year member of USAA and have been profoundly disappointed in the direction the leadership has taken. They haven’t had a military background leader since Bob Davis, Who started the slippery slope by replacing many of the retired military employees with civilians and bean counters. We’ve had good member service, but I have heard many who have not. I am at probate attorney in San Antonio and have had lots of trouble with USAA requiring unnecessary paperwork in order to even speak to an executor or heirs.

I was a USAA member since 1998.

I left them about three years ago for state farm, and Im glad I did it.

They went from great to crap...and really started to pick up speed to the crap department around 2010.

I think what made them great initially is because the pool of customers were basically military members and retirees...which usually means a pool of responsible AND honest people...usually.

But when they really startyed to open it up to everybody who can in some shapre or form associate themselves with a service member...they opened the customer base up to a much larger, much less responbile, and much less honest pool of people..which drove premiums up for everyone.

At least thats my take on what happened to this once great company.

I joined USAA in 1977, been a mostly good run. Used to be very easy dealing with them. But it’s more difficult, I think a lot has to do with them opening up the membership to more than just military officers.

Two of my friends lost their wives to auto accidents, both had high praise for USAA on the compassion and support of USAA.

In the 80’s I got an insurance claim over the phone, now it’s a very structured process, fair IMHO, but not as easy as it used to be.

My zoomie buddy recommended I change from USAA as he got better rates elsewhere. Used to be when insurance companies cornered me and asked who I used, when I said USAA, they replied “Oh” with disappointment and moved on.

“Three of the defendants worked for a call center that provided customer service for USAA and helped the rest of the group to access customers’ banking details to create counterfeit checks, reports Dayton Daily News.”

This is a common issue with big banks. Their call centers are often outsourced, and some of these centers are located overseas. Unfortunately, workers at these outsourced centers sometimes sell customer information to hacking or scammer groups.

I don’t have a bank account with USAA, but I do have auto insurance with them. A scammer once called me, using my USAA ID number, claiming they detected fraud on my non-existent checking account. When I informed them that I don’t bank with USAA, they immediately hung up. How did they get my USAA account information? I believe the outsourced centers may be responsible for hacking USAA’s databases.

I just drop USAA as my car insurance provider. I might move my home owners insurance too. Car Insurance along I am saving 1500 a year.

A few years ago I wanted to close all of my accounts after USAA stopped employing humans to answer the phone and refused to help with an obviously fraudulent charge. I transferred all of my money to a new bank and to this day I still get statements showing zero balances. They used to be wonderful, but now are just another faceless financial giant.

We dropped California USAA after about 40 years and went with Safeco. Saved about the same amount as you. But now Safeco rates have shot up (as all insurers are doing).

I find it curious that all insurers are really raising rates far beyond inflation when their losses don’t seem to be out of line with prior decades. Maybe you can argue Western forest and wildfires have gotten worse, but that’s due to government malfeasance managing forests.

I have been a USAA customer for nearly 40 years. Never thought to compare with other insurance companies as I just assumed I was getting superior rates. But maybe I will start doing that.

I have not had any trouble with the USAA bank, but I don’t keep a lot of money there. Also their claims dept has been top notch. But the last claim I filed was many years ago.

One thing that does tick me off is their commercials since 2020 or so. Yet another company who thinks its acceptable to make White men look like idiots.

I’ve been a member since I first got auto insurance in 1979. My late father (retired U.S. Army, Lieutenant Colonel) got me signed up. He’d had house and auto insurance with them for years. I still have auto and house insurance through them. Both my auto and home insurance rates with them have increased significantly which I suppose is true generally with insurance these days.

Consumer Reports has USAA listed as the top insurance company in one of their recent issues. Number 1! How is that possible? If your experience and other’s complaints I’m reading are becoming commonplace, I’m dropping USAA and looking elsewhere. I’m sure glad I never went with their banking products.

I spoke with a USAA rep at a veteran’s outreach event. He suggested I call an agent. I called the number and told the agent I had a house, RV car and motorcycle. He gave me several other numbers from other insurers, including progressive. Apparently, I was supposed to do his job of coordinating with the agencies they underwrite.

{”they opened the customer base up to a much larger, much less responbile, and much less honest pool of people..which drove premiums up for everyone.”

That wasn’t it at all. Before they even changed the rules to allows others to be members (~1996), they went and started hiring “diversity”. It went downhill fast after that.
