Scientists are sounding the alarm over the spread of “zombie deer disease” amid fears it may evolve to infect humans.
Late last year, experts confirmed Yellowstone National Park’s first case of the infection — officially known as chronic wasting disease — after a deer carcass found in the Wyoming area of the park tested positive for the highly contagious disease. Now, cases have been reported in deer, elk and moose in 33 states across the US, as well as in Canada, Norway and South Korea.
The disease “damages portions of the brain and typically causes progressive loss of body condition, behavioral changes, excessive salivation and death,” according to the New York State Department of Health. It is 100% fatal, and there are no treatments or vaccines.

In all seriousness, prion diseases are freaking scary. Probably best to educate the public so as to minimize risk of transmission.

I would assess the risk of infection of contracting TSE from a cervid that has CWD as low. I don’t wallow in gut pits, or dress deer without gloves. Common steps to reduce exposure.

Heck, all the scientists and epidemiologists couldn’t tell accurately how COVID was transmitted. They put yellow caution tape all over our park benches to keep from picking it up, I guess.
Yes, it’s unlikely but given as a remote possibility. The outcome would be bad enough that’s it’s worth the research effort to try and head off the threat or deal with it.

Prion diseases are truly terrifying. Random misfolded proteins are a real biological reset concern. Just imagine the world giving out a genetic code that the find out later has slippage points, creating random proteins that may or may not be understood. Throw in the political desire to not look for a protein set of possibilities but also refuse to look if any are being misfolded. Hell it might show up early as a 10-20% increase in mortality then the avalanche.
The issues with CWD in deer has been that it’s stated no one has died from cross contamination but yet we know that isn’t even close to true.
Prion diseases are a truly a possible zombie apocalypse or a species ending issue. I rank prions at the #1 real possible civilization ending disease that isn’t really a disease. It’s a genetic abnormality.

The prions are environmentally there are do not degrade. It’s that crazy of an issue. We don’t understand them. Not even close. It would be like you body building collagen in your body but if is sequences correct but one are folds left rather than right and causes the modified collagen to cause your brain/body to fall apart. It is that simple.
