Australian geologists have solved the mystery of what triggered and sustained an extreme ice age that gripped the Earth more than 700 million years ago. The study, published in the journal Geology, reveals how the Earth's thermostat works and how sensitive the climate is to changes in atmospheric carbon dioxide.
Low volcanic activity and rock weathering The researchers used plate tectonic models to simulate the evolution of the Earth's surface and carbon dioxide emission from underwater volcanoes. They found that the onset of the ice age coincided with a period of very low volcanic activity, which reduced the amount of greenhouse gas in the atmosphere.
They also discovered that a large volcanic province in Canada formed before the ice age was eroded by glaciers and rain, further lowering carbon dioxide levels by absorbing it from the air.
Geologists reveal what caused the 57-million-year freezing on EarthSturt Formation glacial deposits from the Sturtian Glaciation circa 717–664 million years ago in the northern Flinders Ranges, Australia, close to the Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary. Research lead author Dr. Adriana Dutkiewicz from the School of Geosciences, the University of Sydney, pointing to a thick bed of glacial deposits.
The study's lead author, Dr. Adriana Dutkiewicz from the University of Sydney, said: "Imagine the Earth almost completely frozen over. That's just what happened about 700 million years ago; the planet was covered in ice from the poles to the equator, and temperatures dropped. We now think we have cracked the mystery: it was caused by historically low volcanic carbon dioxide emissions, aided by weathering of a large pile of volcanic rocks in Canada."

The two plate motion models diverge in their predictions of the timing and progression of Rodinia break-up, ocean-basin age, ocean-basement depth, sea-level evolution, and mid-ocean ridge (MOR) carbon outflux. One model predicts MOR outflux and ocean basin volume−driven sea level lower than during the Late Cenozoic glaciation, while the other predicts outgassing and sea level exceeding those of the Late Cretaceous hothouse climate. The second model would preclude a major glaciation, while the first model implies that the trigger for the Sturtian glaciation could have been a combination of an extremely low MOR outflux (∼9 Mt C/yr) and Franklin LIP weathering. Such minimal outflux could have maintained an icehouse state for 57 m.y. when silicate weathering was markedly reduced, with a gradual build-up of MOR CO2 in the atmosphere paired with terrestrial volcanism leading to its termination.Duration of Sturtian “Snowball Earth” glaciation linked to exceptionally low mid-ocean ridge outgassing
I do know one thing. Plants need CO2. And a green earth requires enough of it to keep it that way.

WHAT’S ERUPTING? LIST & MAP OF CURRENTLY ACTIVE VOLCANOES
Low volcanic activity and low CO2 count.
The last ice age was caused by the dinosaurs switching from gas powered SUVs to electric vehicles, lowering atmospheric CO2 and cooling the Earth too much.
The “scientists” revealed their theory. Their theory is...uh...right there in the D- range.
Pure conjecture at this point ouch. YCFS
More of that “fragile delicate balance” crap. Meaning we must tip toe around lest the earth be destroyed.
This is a religion we are dealing with.
Next ice age will kill more mammals by orders of magnitude than any global warming caused by cycles of Sun activity. If humans can delay next ice age by 1%, it will mean mammals can live a bit longer.
Had nothing to do with the big ball of burning hot gas in the sky.
FYI - this was during the Precambrian. There wasn’t much life around but some algae.
You don't SOLVE anything with computer models, particularly those that are preprogrammed with guesses as to the causes of glaciation (such as low CO2). If you program something in, you get the same thing out. When used properly, computer models can give technical insight, they can never give "proof".
If I wanted a research grant from the federal government, I would draft a proposal on how homosexual abortionists positively impact the climate by limiting world CO2 emissions.
I’m surprised Planned Parenthood isn’t getting money from the EPA yet.
What we call “science” today would pass as a science fair project for my 7 grade teacher.
>Low volcanic activity and low CO2 count.<
That’s my take on it too. 0.04% is a rather low amount historically. Are the authors of this study hinting that reducing CO2 will produce an ice age and the commentary is saying the opposite using climate porn?

If you take a closer look at the above lefty Earth.org graphs you will notice two major things.
1/ 400 ppm is an historically low number.
2/ The graphs are manipulated by compressing some blocks of time and expanding others to create a fake hockey stick.
Pay attention to the time lines and the narrative falls apart.
By the way, this is also what was taught in the 70’s when we were fearing the coming ice age. Al Gore must have been stoned those years and didn’t pay attention.

Low CO2 would be a problem but high CO2 is regulated by plants. As CO2 climbs, plants flourish. The ratio of CO2 to the rest of our atmosphere is like comparing 1-1/4 Oz to a ton.
EXACTLY. Comment of the day.
Labeling models 'proof' - i.e., "quantifies" & "predicts" - is like using faked bigfoot prints as evidence that they exist.
Stating the obvious, the problem for such claims is that ALL models fail to replicate the climate record. Even mann's 'hockey stick' data was 'biased' (i.e., FABRICATED) to 'predict' his preconceived outcome.
This is bizarro logic. The last 'little ice age' was caused by a volcano in 1250s and the associated volcanic winter. They seem to want it both ways.
Popular Science reported on this during THE COMING ICE AGE hoax back in 1980!

AND WE DID IT! Stopped THE COMING ICE AGE in it’s tracks! Now they are weeping about too much CO2!
