NBA guard making $1.7M guaranteed this season accused of stealing cheap products from Target — 7 different times

Ayoung NBA guard who will earn nearly $2 million this season has been accused of shoplifting basic personal items from Target on multiple occasions.

Ryan Rollins has had a rough week. On Monday, the Washington Wizards elected to waive him, a move that Sports Illustrated Wizards beat writer Gage Sheets initially described as "puzzling" since the team had just acquired Rollins from the Golden State Warriors last July, and at just 21 years old, he seemed to offer them a lot of value for his $1.7 million guaranteed salary.

By Wednesday, Sheets was likely no longer confused by the Wizards' decision. That day, documents were filed in Alexandria General District Court in Virginia alleging that Rollins had shoplifted items from Target seven different times between September 9 and November 9 of last year — while he was still on the Wizards' roster.

According to reports, Rollins took everyday household items, such as groceries, body wash, and candles. All of the allegedly stolen items were worth less than $1,000.

Because of the low value of the items, Rollins has been charged with seven counts of petit larceny, a Class 1 misdemeanor. In Virginia, such misdemeanors carry a maximum sentence of 12 months behind bars and a maximum fine of $2,500.

Court documents listed Nathan Muyskens as Rollins' defense attorney, but Rollins has reportedly not yet entered a plea. He is scheduled to appear in court again on February 7.

"We just recently learned of the charges against Ryan," said a statement from President Michael Winger of Monumental Basketball, which owns several pro basketball teams in our nation's capital, including the Wizards. "We cannot comment on that matter, or the basis for our roster decisions.

"We do take our role very seriously as ... representatives of our fans and a team our community can be proud of," the statement continued. "These are expectations, not aspirations. We're eager to move forward with our team as constituted and pursue excellence on and off the court."

In his short stint with the Wizards, Rollins appeared in 10 games and averaged 4.1 points. He played an additional 22 games with the Warriors, the team that selected him in the second round of the 2022 draft. Originally from Detroit, Rollins played college ball at the University of Toledo.

That is what he learned in California. He should not have to pay for toiletries. He needs his salary for tennis shoes, watches, and gold chains. Just part of reparations.

I doubt he’s a kleptomaniac, as they often steal stuff they have absolutely no use for..................

He ain’t the only one. When I was in college I was a desk clerk at a motel across the street from Disneyland. The owner was well connected to the Rams. Vince Ferragamo called virtually every week asking for free tickets to Disneyland. It was to the point the manager would tell me to say he was not in, to avoid the call.

Perhaps the feeling that he shouldn’t have to pay for things. Some people believe that if you reach a certain income, you no longer pay. Paying for things is for chumps. It’s like paying taxes. Rich people don’t pay taxes.

Some families have the tradition of taking the kids blueberry picking every summer. Some families take their kids to the same camping spot every year. Some families rob Target.

We all remain nostalgic for the exciting family activities of our youth....

When I was in elementary school in rural Mississippi in the mid 60’s, it was a small town and school had all 12 grades in one building.

We had a family that the mother was a teacher, the father was the coach, and their kids were in various grades in school, 3 IIRC.

I don’t remember much about the coach, as I was only in the 3rd grade, but his wife had a reputation of being a really mean teacher and she would have been one of mine on a couple of years.

One Monday morning they were all absent from school, the whole family. There was much confusion as to what was going on, having to get a substitute teacher and coach and all that goes with it.

But little ears hear everything and we were no exception, hearing the adult teachers and staff talk about the scandal that happened over the weekend.

Our town was 69 miles southeast of Memphis, Tennessee, so going to Memphis to shop was not unusual, seeing that there were no big stores in our little rural agricultural town.

What had occurred was the biggest scandal our little town had seen probably in since ever.

There was a store in Memphis called ‘DIXIEMART’ which was a new concept at that time, equal to a Costco or Sam’s in today’s market. You had to join it like Sam’s, you had to be a public employee, military, union, etc.

They had gone there on Saturday and gotten arrested for shoplifting, the whole family apparently were thieves and were teaching their kids to do the same.

They were never seen in our town again.......................

It’ll probably be blown by the end of the season on ink, metal, new grill, Escalade, blow, weed, etc.
