Jack LaLanne (born September 26, 1914, San Francisco, California, U.S.—died January 23, 2011, Morro Bay, California) American exercise and nutrition guru, television personality, and motivational speaker.

During his childhood, LaLanne suffered from poor health and erratic behaviour, which he would come to believe was caused by a sugar addiction. As a teen, he attended a lecture by nutritionist Paul Bragg, after which LaLanne cut sugar from his diet and embarked on an exercise routine.

These lifestyle changes would come to define his decades-long quest to promote healthy living in America. In 1936 he opened the first public health club (later a chain) in the United States, located in Oakland, California. Among his other innovations, LaLanne originated the leg-extension machine, now a fitness standard

Jack was the original.

As a little kid, I still remember seeing Jack on black and white TV with his chair doing all sorts of exercises.

Stay at home moms loved to watch his morning show.
I don’t think any of them actually exercised.

Watched him as a kid, he was all the rage with the stay-home Moms. They didn’t do the exercises but they watched religiously while “doing chores”. Had his wife with him on the show, IIRC.

Well, if I could go back in time and tell my dad ONE thing, it would be to look up this LaLanne fellow and do exactly what he tells you to as regards your health. Then my dad might not have had a serious stroke when I was 6 and dementia by the time I was 10 or 11.

I don’t care for the word ‘Guru’, with the religious connotations, but if a person followed what Jack was talking about, they would probably live a lot longer, and healthier, than the typical adult in the 1960’s and 1970’s.

Interestingly, when I last got seriously into weightlifting, I started wearing the Vibram ‘toe shoes’ or ‘shoe gloves’ and MAN did they help with anything where I was on my feet, such as squats, deadlifts, and military press. Having heels higher than toes or ball of foot is not a really good thing for a lot of lifting (especially kettlebell get-ups).

Lived in a way that would have been suitable punishment for a felon—

—that would have had me begging for death in weeks if not days—

—died anyway.

caused by a sugar addiction...

Sugar is the root of a lot of evil. Big Sugar fought it out decades ago with the meat industry (bacon/butter/etc). Big Sugar one, even gets its own line on nutrition panels with "added sugars".

Sugar equals inflammation, the bane of a healthy body.

His brother Norman didn't follow Jack's advice (he did play golf), and also lived to 97. Genes count.
