Dec. 6 (UPI) -- A Pennsylvania library said a book returned to the facility after being spotted at a book sale was nearly 120 years overdue.
The Carbondale Public Library said in a Facebook post that the book, The Cruise of the Esmeralda by Harry Collingwood, was returned by personnel from the Hawley Library, who spotted the tome at a book sale.
The book still bears a pocket inside the cover listing the library's rules and contains a library card issued to Horace Short in 1904.
The library said the book was checked out for 43,641 days, which would have accrued a fine of $872.82 at the 1904 rate of 2 cents per day, or $10,910.25 at the current rate of 25 cents per day.
"Mr. Short is very lucky we currently cap fines for books at $10," the library said in a comment under the post.
libraries get rid of books all the time...and they’re old ones...
Maybe he was on the Titanic or the Lusitania................
I bought a copy of Huckleberry Finn at the local Goodwill that was in pristine condition.
It was from the local HS library and stamped inside the cover as ‘EXCESS TO BE SOLD’..............
“They use a novel method of getting the treasure ashore without anybody in authority noticing.”
That was a problem 120 years ago. These days the pirates call it ‘civil asset forfeiture’.
Achtung! To the bonfire.
Pingy...
Fixed it for corrupt politicians.
My how time flies like an arrow-
However, Fruit flies like a Banana
My local library won’t accept patron purchased replacements.

Good for two years from Day 23, 1904 if not cancelled or surrendered earlier.
Day 23? On the one hand, January 23rd...
On the other, Simchat Torah.
Bere-sheeth...
And it came to pass...
I'd already been to Carbondale PA on street view when this story first surfaced. Naturally a number of names involve coal over there.
There's even a *modern* Anthracite Hotel in the center of town, next to the convenience store named for the area code (570).
The sign out front indicates that its restaurant is named... Kol.
Could be important.. naaaah, it's like the midrash about little Moses taking Pharaoh's crown off of his head. Explained the speech impediment.
Shiny gold, hot coals -- he wouldn't know any different. Bright baubles... all the same.
...קול, כל
Hotel Anthracite is a modern hotel with a strong connection to the Coal Mining heritage of Carbondale.
