Mary Lou Retton, the first American woman to win all-around gymnastics gold at the Olympics, is "fighting for her life" with a serious illness, according to a fundraiser posted by her daughter.
McKenna Lane Kelley said her mother has "a very rare form of pneumonia" and is "not able to breathe on her own." She said Retton has been in the ICU for more than a week and is not insured but declined to go into further details.
Proceeds from the fundraiser will reportedly go to Retton's hospital bills.
Kelley is the second of Retton's four daughters and was a gymnast herself at LSU from 2016 to 2019.

Suddenly.
Safe and effective
All kinds of “rare” cancers and infections have been happening the last two/three years. Very puzzling.

She was on a TV commercial this week for one of those ‘buy this insurance, no questions asked!’ products.
She looked like hell for her age. :(
No medical insurance? I sure hope she at least signed up for the insurance she was hawking!
One report I saw stated that Mary Lou Retton had net worth of about $8 million. While I do have sincere compassion for Ms. Retton and her dire health, I take umbrage that her family feels the need to fundraise to pay for her healthcare bills. Unless I’m missing something, there a whole lot of people with significantly less net worth that could justify raising money for their personal health care expenses.
What we've been personally hearing about are individuals who have had cancer in remission for a long time is a return of the cancers, and in many cases worse than the original episodes.
“ One report I saw stated…”

Was it on the internet? If so, it must be true. /sarc
Net-worth is not always cash, but property and other assets....................
Good observation. Besides, wasn't the point of ObamaCare to REQUIRE health coverage for all? Something is very missing in this.
And that "other" thing about "safe and effective," as another comment noted.

Yep, I've seen that commercial. Her eyes are weird, kinda freaky!
Sorry to hear this. I hope she recovers.
I saw that ad very recently. I thought she looked really old, then I found out she was only in her mid 50’s!
Sounds like family members are trying to preserve their wealth and not give it to the health system.
IMHO this could be a lifesaver from RTI/pneumonia (we all know that being in the ICU with pneumonia is practically a death sentence because orthodox medicine has no effective therapies):

Some people will die before they give up their stuff
I saw those commercials too (ColonialPenn?) and thought she looked older than she should. Sounded older too.
Ironic that she doesn't have insurance. ColonialPenn should jump in just to cover their investment in their spokesperson--if not for human kindness.
I saw her at an LSU gymnastics meet within the last year or so. Her daughter is/was on the team. She looked good to me. But, one’s health can go South pretty quickly, so there’s no telling.
