On a quiet cul de sac in suburban Los Angeles, the installation of Martin Guevara and Grace Kuo's prefab accessory dwelling unit, or ADU, caused quite a stir in the neighborhood. "It was like a block party," said Guevara, 68. "All of our neighbors came out to watch." Guevara was referring to a prefab ADU designed and built by Villa Homes; the 850-square-foot home was craned over the couple's existing home and placed into position in their backyard in the South Bay last year. "It was in two halves," said his daughter Melanie Guevara, 33, who lives in the ADU behind her childhood home with husband Devon Hollowood, 34. "It was already outfitted, including the appliances."

Single family homes are out of range for many people. When you can no longer build out and land is too valuable you build up.
Why single out Ukraine? Do you want the Us government to instead fund single family homes for everyone?
“After an initial video consultation, she learned that a custom 850-square-foot prefab ADU would cost $475,000,”
Stuff like this is just foreign to me. I got divorced about 6 years ago. I bought a 950 square foot house, on 1.25 acres, for $55,000. It is a brick house. It was in move in condition, no repairs needed. My total house payment is $400 a month (with almost no down payment), including $275 A YEAR property tax and insurance.
Spot On!
There was a time when elderly parents moving in with one of the kids was pretty normal. Many people called those “The Good ‘Ole Days”. The days of middle class couples retiring early, drawing 6-figure pensions and traveling Europe and Asia in their golden years is an anomaly that will likely not last much longer. Cops, firefighters, teachers and other public sector union jobs will be the last to lose their gold plated pensions, but they will.
California requires all cities and towns to have state approved “housing elements.” Our town on the San Francisco peninsula just got its housing element approved. It cost a fortune to produce and, as expected, says the town is too white, too privileged, too rich and we need to cram in lots more housing for poor people. It’s full of what you describe.
Rep. Scott Wiener in CA rammed through a bill a couple years ago to allow a single family home on a quarter acre to be demolished and replaced by two big homes each with an ADU in the backyard. Imagine a nice, pleasant neighborhood with quarter acre lots and single story ranch homes turned into THAT!
The state is insane. It’s all especially insane because the population of California is declining partly because of the incessant and massively intrusive government interference like this.
How about some nice shipping containers for Americans to live in? Looking sharp America!
Why single out Ukraine?
Did you read what you responded to?
They weren't singled out. I mentioned Ukraine, globalist and tens of millions of illegals which are costing us many hundreds of more billions.
Why are you so touchy about Ukraine?
My 1 question about ADUs, Mini Houses etc is how do they hold up against hurricanes?
sears used to be awesome!
No, China builds spacious apartments. This makes the US look like S. America or the Philippines.
Our left wing mayor and city council has spent thousands in this - even brought some Portland and Seattle folks to help in the “research.” Petitions were denied to put the rezoning question on the ballot, so at this time the residents have no voice. They have been tearing down older homes and building million + McMansions. Most of the city is single family dwellings and they want to put in multi family, low cost dwellings to make themselves feel better. Of course, the mayor’s street will be exempt - his home backs up to the golf course and he’s loaded. I love my city - it’s small, safe, walkable, and beautiful, yet becoming very liberal. Outsiders want to come in and ruin it, and they’re doing a good job of it.
Buried deep in the bowels of the article...
“850-square-foot prefab ADU would cost $475,000”
And that assumes you provide the land to plop it on.
Could admitting and housing 8 million illegals be part of the problem?
They are massively ruining the San Francisco peninsula. We bought a summer home in North Idaho almost six years ago and the growth here is awful. It’s getting as bad as the San Fran peninsula. I’m starting to see tear-downs here now, too. Nobody is satisfied with simple, old-fashioned, and non-pretentious.
Here in Idaho all we hear about is affordable housing and schools — the same issues we had in CA.
To bad it’s happening in Idaho.
Maybe someone can come up with an insert that can be put into a shipping container. Hey maybe China could do that?
Or maybe just cut stupid taxes, quit spending on wars in other parts of the world that have nothing to do with usl, reduce government waste, do away with ‘sit-on-your-butt-collecting-a-government-paycheck’ handouts and significantly change every other policy which created the inflationary problems we’re suffering through- then average people will be able to thrive & prosper the same way parents, & their parents and their parents did (I’m a millennial too)! We shouldn’t be forced to rent or live in trailers or shipping containers to survive. We shouldn’t have to give up on the Anerican dream of owning our own homes! 😉
I was being sarcastic Red.
Ohhhh! 🤣🤣 Now I feel kinda air-headed 🤪
