All Things Prepping, Simple Living, Back to the Basics [Survival Today, an on going thread]
CottonBall

Posted on 09/16/2023 3:07:53 PM PDT by CottonBall

This is an ongoing thread – meaning come back to chat, post information, or ask questions any time. Hopefully the thread won’t stagnate and I’ll do better at posting weekly (or bi-weekly) topics than I have in the past. (anyone willing to post a topic now and then we'll be highly praised and appreciated).

We are in for some bumpy rides, and prepping can only help. If for peace of mind, if nothing else. We have a wonderful gardening thread and a current-events survival/prepping thread, and hopefully this one can piggyback off of those, maybe having a longer discussion about certain topics or … whatever. It's your thread, do what you like with it! (civilly, of course)

Here are granny’s threads, if anyone wants to peruse them:

“I think that for almost everyone, the home BOB is about going to a shelter or a friend’s home, so it should have all the things based on that, the one in the car should be based on living in the car for X days and/or hiking out under worse winter or summer conditions and for the longest distance to your home or occupied houses.”

good ideas - narrowing down their purposes makes it easier to do

“Keep some old tattered baggy clothes to look as destitute as everyone else.

If you are clean and well fed, you will stand out.”

Those are my everyday clothes, so not a problem, LOL!

I was thinking we’d need to lose weight, no matter how much food I’ve stored, so we’d fit in.

“Been making our own canned dog food lately. Boneless skinless chicken breasts and fresh carrots”

A topic on the last thread was pet food. We’ll do that again soon and hopefully you’ll share your recipe.

I love that series. that’ll be a good reference for the BOB topic.

Either of you want to write something up for it?

We’ll do financial independence next week, so bug out bags the week after?

“For the people who have the energy to do it, and who keep freezers full of great meats and such, they should be prepared to can everything worth saving.”

I try to keep enough empty jars on hand in case my freezers go. I’m feeling vulnerable now since my garden produce has been taking my emergency supply, lol!.

and having a gas stove is crucial too.

“I have chocolate (Snickers, Baci, M&Ms, and Almond Roca)”

Those would NEVER last long enough in my house to worry about going stale.

According to googel: “Basically, chocolate is a great candidate for short-term storage of fewer than 5 years if you store it in a cool, dry environment in an airtight container. Repackaging in Mylar or glass jars with an oxygen absorber or vacuum sealing is considered safe due to the low moisture nature of chocolate.”

As far as potatoes I buy the Idahoan Baby reds in the packets. They cook up just like mashed potatoes. There are other ones like garlic mashed, cheese etc;

Sounds good.

I like this thread and the exchange/sharing of information and experiences.

I'll try to make time to contribute as often as I can.

“I canned a bunch of the meat. Lasted for years in the jar.”

So did you have to eat LOTS of canned meat all at once or did you end up throwing some away after the (oops!) I mistook for “for” as “four” and was going to ask if you had to throw a lot out after four years. :-)

Spunky, you are a marvel!

I swear I looked for that information for years. I looked on prepper sites, which apparently was a mistake.

That would be wonderful, you have a lot of knowledge to share. And I have a lot of learning to do

Lol!!!! Sounds like fun. I presume you are talking about Pheasant Pie.

This sounds like a good way to make one.

My attempt at home grown food was a couple of tomato plants and a yellow squash this year. I LOVE tomatoes but I didn’t thin the the blooms and most of the tomatoes were small. I got several nice yellow squash in enough of an interval I was able to pick before they got to big and saute them. Yummy!!

I got so PO’d while out shopping today. We came out of Lowes Hardware store and there was a pickup parked there with the Mexican Flag flying behind.

Our city has become a sister city to Colima, Mexico. That is where most of the Mexicans here in Pasco, WA have come from. Tonight they again had a contingent from Colima come and put on a program at our court house. I guess that makes it alright to fly the Mexican flag in the US. :-(

Hello Spunky!

Well, thanks for that video - I just watched it. Looks great and easy, too.

I anyone told me that I’d be up watching Pheasant Pot Pie videos at 3 in the morning, I would have thought they were nuts. Or I’m nuts lol.

That would be rather strange to see - it’s one thing to immigrate to another country, but it’s another to fly the flag of the country you LEFT....at least publicly.

We have some Mangalitsa pigs. I’d never heard of them, but apparently they have a nicely marbled meat - the fat is somehow distributed throughout the meat and makes it juicy and tasty.

I’ll report back in November after I’ve had my first taste!

I’ve never tried eBay. I should look into it. I’m trying to stop buying things, but living on the farm with my daughter, son-in-law and the 3 kids (13, 11, 8) I am always finding something to buy!

One thing for sure - Amazon makes it so darned easy to buy things!

”I’d rather head for Heaven than eat bugs and live in a cave or the shell of our former home.”

I totally agree with you, Diana. And thinking about CottonBall’s original question of “What do you think is the most crucial survival topic to start with?”, I would say number 1 should be to make sure I am right with God. By that I mean a firm foundation in the importance of a strong personal relationship with Jesus, knowing that He paid the price once and for all for my sins, assuring me of an eternity in Heaven, my life belongs to Him, and what ever time I have left on this earth is His to direct.

I’m trying to imbed as much of His Word (scripture) in my mind and heart in case my Bible is lost or taken away. I’m trying to learn to live in total trust and faith that If and when things get hard, He WILL provide.

That said, I still understand the necessity to prep, and pray that He will guide me with that and keep me mindful to remember that having enough for my family to survive is good, but having enough to share with others around us is also important.

So I guess what I am trying to say is #1 in the prep plan is a firm foundation in attitude and faith to guide the way for all the rest. Because when the SHTF for real it may not be possible to protect all the amassed stored food, planted gardens, generators, ammunition/guns ……
