All Things Prepping, Simple Living, Back to the Basics [Survival Today, an on going thread]
CottonBall

Posted on 09/16/2023 3:07:53 PM PDT by CottonBall

This is an ongoing thread – meaning come back to chat, post information, or ask questions any time. Hopefully the thread won’t stagnate and I’ll do better at posting weekly (or bi-weekly) topics than I have in the past. (anyone willing to post a topic now and then we'll be highly praised and appreciated).

We are in for some bumpy rides, and prepping can only help. If for peace of mind, if nothing else. We have a wonderful gardening thread and a current-events survival/prepping thread, and hopefully this one can piggyback off of those, maybe having a longer discussion about certain topics or … whatever. It's your thread, do what you like with it! (civilly, of course)

Here are granny’s threads, if anyone wants to peruse them:

“For a few days now I have been looking at the “Bug out Bag” stuff online. Some are ok some are stupid what to put in that bag are interesting it is a personal choice.”

yes, there are a lot of options. if I put everything I think I need together, I’ll need more than one bag!

please post what you decide to pack,I’m sure it’ll be helpful to many. Me included - I thought I had a place I could stay in,until I saw Maui. I’ll be leaving if they catch the forest on fire.

A few weeks before the last hurricane threat we decided we are getting too old to bail out at these threats so decided to research a basic light duty emergency generator
to see us through possible storm related power outages.

Just something powerful enough to provide some lights and power the refrigerator enough each day to prevent immediate food spoilage.

We found a Champion Power Equipment 4375/3500-Watt Portable Generator on Amazon priced at $326.47
It had good user ratings so we decided to think about the purchase for a while.

Two weeks later as Hurricane Idalia approached we decided to make the purchase.
But when we went to Amazon they had jumped the price to $412.00

Searching the net we found the next better model of the Champion 4375/3500-Watt Generator at Bass Pro for $339.97 with no state tax and free shipping.

It arrived the 5th day after the order was placed.

Just search pressure canning no water potatoes. Here’s one:

Several others will pop up, all with just a little difference.

Pink Tip Greasys are Appalachian beans. You let them grow until the seeds are just about bursting the seams and the pod is turning color. Most of them have to be de-strung but it’s SO worth it. Ck them out:

“We are in for some bumpy rides, and prepping can only help.”

Ain’t that the truth! And it doesn’t even need to BE THIS WAY! Grrrr!

“What do you think is the most crucial SURVIVAL topic to start with?”

I probably sound like a broken record, but get yourself DEBT FREE. That, in and of itself, frees you up to so many possibilities and opportunities! Use whatever method works for you. Snowball-Method Debt Payment, Dave Ramsey’s ‘Baby Steps’ or just cut up your credit cards for starters!

How the Debt Snowball Method Works:

https://www.ramseysolutions.com/debt/how-the-debt-snowball-method-works

The Seven Baby Steps:

https://www.ramseysolutions.com/dave-ramsey-7-baby-steps

I was debt free when I retired (I sold my farm, my only debt) at age 56. Having a positive cash flow is so important if you want to buy a generator for your home, pay cash for that big freezer and the side of beef you want to buy below grocery store prices. You don’t have to worry about a big car repair or any other life emergency that crops up (and they DO!) because you’re financially prepared.

I have been ‘prepping’ since I was a kid; I grew up in Tornado & Blizzard Country, so I learned from the best - My Dad. He was always prepared for anything; I felt VERY safe growing up and I still want that level of safety and readiness in my life, today. (Miss You, Dad!)

Yeah, skills learned in the Army helped a lot, too - but you can read an Army Manual for any of THAT kind of stuff. ;)

One more thought: I’m NEVER going to be the kind of hard-charging prepper that wants to be the Last Woman Standing. If things are THAT dire (world war, a nuclear strike, aliens invade us hoping to find intelligent life) *SMIRK* I’d rather head for Heaven than eat bugs and live in a cave or the shell of our former home.

Thank you for reviving this.

We certainly need it today in light of the dumpster fire this country has become under democrat rule and with the efforts of the WEEF.

Keep some old tattered baggy clothes to look as destitute as everyone else.

If you are clean and well fed, you will stand out.

“tattered baggy clothes”

Exactly. Camouflage is a great survival tactic—and there are so many variations on that theme.

My favorite old Y2K prep advice was to get red tape and a thick black marker so that if things got really bad you could write “danger—quarantine” in big scrawled letters on the door and put on the red tape...

;-)

Or these days, just write *COVID* and that will terrify much of the population.

Thanks for the ping CB. This thread needed now more than ever.

Things are going downhill much more rapidly than we’re led to
believe. Needlesstosay, keep this name on the list.

Been making our own canned dog food lately. Boneless skinless chicken breasts and fresh carrots. I can put back a case of it for less than a third the cost of that store bought stuff.

Leo The Snaggletooth Wonderdog absolutely loves it. We do buy his kibble, though.

As far as keeping "Get Home" gear in your vehicle -

For those that like to read SHTF fiction I recommend "GOING HOME" by A. American.

It is an enjoyable read as well as thought provoking.
The author presents some good ideas about what kind of gear might work out in a "Get Home" scenario.

It is book one of a series but is basically a stand-alone narrative about a man having to trek 250 miles to get home after a massive EMP strike.

There is a lengthy excerpt at this link:

Going Home: A Novel by A. American

Please take me off the ping list. These days I’m likely to see everything posted on FR on any given day anyway, so no need to ping.

I used to check out granny’s threads back when they were going. It seemed like they eventually became a valiant but doomed attempt to repost every recipe from the internet, but there were quite a few interesting things in them too.

“valiant but doomed attempt to repost every recipe from the internet”

LOL, very true. But it made granny happy. Hobbies are limited when you can’t leave the house.

I loved it when she reminisced about the old days and how she got through some tough times.

Good advice!

But there’s a balance between keeping quiet and finding fellow preppers to trust - for those of us that moved cross country. My neighbors are all conservatives, most have guns, but we’ve stopped the conversation short of any prepping info.

We totally ruined the look poor plan, hubby has to have his toys. oh well...
