All Things Prepping, Simple Living, Back to the Basics [Survival Today, an on going thread]
CottonBall

Posted on 09/16/2023 3:07:53 PM PDT by CottonBall

This is an ongoing thread – meaning come back to chat, post information, or ask questions any time. Hopefully the thread won’t stagnate and I’ll do better at posting weekly (or bi-weekly) topics than I have in the past. (anyone willing to post a topic now and then we'll be highly praised and appreciated).

We are in for some bumpy rides, and prepping can only help. If for peace of mind, if nothing else. We have a wonderful gardening thread and a current-events survival/prepping thread, and hopefully this one can piggyback off of those, maybe having a longer discussion about certain topics or … whatever. It's your thread, do what you like with it! (civilly, of course)

Here are granny’s threads, if anyone wants to peruse them:

What a good idea, Spunky!

Did she settle on a color? I hope you don’t have to do any actual house painting!

Lol I did figure that out eventually. It required the putting on of stronger glasses.

No she hasn’t settled on a color yet. Heavens no we are not doing the painting ourselves. I did enough of that in my lifetime.

Howdy, Judy!

You must have Corelle too.

I like the white but I have a set with ships on it for my hubby.

Hi Gran...

That’s Corelle? I don’t have Corelle, but they sure look like mine. Mine are Mikasa “French Countryside”. And they break if I drop them lol.

Lol Spunky I just watched that video.

I would normally feel badly for the squirrels, but one year they chewed their way into my cottage and wintered there with their friends. What a mess they made for me, with lots of damage. Now when I see one taken down, I feel a little bit of retribution lol.

They do “harvest” the legs and add them to a bag full of them in the freezer. They’re going to cook them up one day, and I have told them to be sure to NOT invite me over for that, and don’t try to fool me and pawn it off as something else at any other time.

I’ve had a few Champion generators and like them. They’re fairly quiet and the company is accessible, not some generic no-name Chinese company with no way to contact and no support and really bad English in what little literature they have. Champion puts their 1-877 number right on the unit. I’m sure their stuff is made in China but you can buy replacement parts from them, unlike most China stuff.

I’ve got a Champion 4500/3650 and just found a propane conversion kit for it for $80.

https://www.vpowerequipment.com/lpg-conversion-carburetor-kit-for-champion-3000-generators-3201-1/

They also have natural gas kits. Gasoline doesn’t store forever but NG/LPG do. The LPG kit is a three fuel kit, gasoline, NG and LPG. The NG kit is gasoline and NG.

I could get a 500lb tank of propane and run this thing forever. Of course the noise would attract the zombies.

I’ve got 6 - 20lb propane tanks and have been meaning to get them all filled. We’ve got a Big Buddy heater we use on occasion. If electric went out for a couple of weeks due to an ice storm, including in town, there would be no buying gasoline. Having that LPG kit plus full tanks would be a life saver.

This area is known for ice storms(freezing rain/sleet) that can accumulate 2 inches of ice on all surfaces. Might be a once in 50-100 year thing but it does happen. We can also get extreme wind and in both cases, going without electric for two weeks can happen.

Thanks for the re-posting of your Prepping Library link.....such a valuable resource, FRiend.

Do you happen to recall the FReeper who’d purchased the home freeze dryer???

I’m embarrassed I can’t recall his/her name....but, I would love to know how it is working out, today.

I imagine their family has a nice food supply, stored away.

We’re still looking into to one.

Don’t tell anyone but Corelle breaks too.

The ability to make wine without using store-bought sugar is going to be an important skill, I think! The best wine I ever made was from butternut squash and ordinary bread yeast.

It might be prudent to grow a few tobacco plants every year, even if you don’t smoke. Addictions get worse under stressful situations. And if you choose the right variety of tobacco, it’ll have nice blossoms to enjoy.

If the car is too hot to store lighters, it may be worth get a flint striker. I’ve tried several types, and the easiest ones to use are sold in the “welding supplies” section, and look like barbecue tongs stuck to a bowl. The ones sold in the camping section tend to take practice before most people can get a spark reliably. The welding flint strikers, all you do is squeeze the handles.

My russets fall apart when I try to mix them up as a salad.

Are you using them the same day they were cooked? If so, try cooking them the day before, and let them chill in the fridge overnight. The chilling changes the starches, making it so they hold their shape better.

“””I could get a 500lb tank of propane and run this thing forever. Of course the noise would attract the zombies.”””

I think people just need to do their own preparations and worry less about the movie scenes of a post-apocalyptic world, if the end of the world happens there will be plenty of time to adjust to it mentally and emotionally in terms of shooting and killing, tactics and armed patrols, booby traps, and improvised explosives, sniper rifles and all the other sexy stuff that a lot of us like so much (me included).

I think the primary mental image should be something like an extended national hurricane, mostly people trying to pull together with plenty of looters of the usual type in some areas as people flock to the shelters and camps, the kind of looter guys who get run off if you shoot at them as they look for valuables in empty houses and sparsely occupied neighborhoods.

If we ever get to where all of America’s ability to supply camps and shelters and the ability to start the rebuilding process ends then we on this thread will all be completely different people and will already have an entirely new set of answers and mental attitudes.

We don’t need to make that our starting point for keeping our families safe and comfortable.

There will be plenty of warning before the zombies who are literally starving start migrating, and life becomes a movie of kill or be killed.

These are the kinds of things I buy to give away, it also gives you an excuse to check on someone without seeming intrusive.

I spent the day at the dentist and then grocery stores. I’m cheap enough that I go and pick what I want at each store. Got some shrimp for $4 a pound! I couldn’t pass that one up. Sam’s Club usually has the best lettuce. And Aldi’s has staples, I stocked up on flour because I’m trying to learn to make French bread. Again. I have enough bread crumbs so I hope I actually figure it out this time.

My plan is typically to learn how to make something with white flour. And vital wheat gluten and barley malt. Then I move to whole wheat, to see how much whole wheat can I get away with. I would love to make a whole wheat ciabatta but I can’t seem to get those big holes once I go past more than a little bit of whole wheat.
