5th-grade health teacher hands out 'deeply inappropriate' assignment to students

A middle school teacher on Long Island has been pulled from the classroom after handing out a controversial assignment to fifth-grade health students.

The assignment was given to students at Howard Mattlin Middle School on September 11th by teacher and track coach Mandy Bieder.

The students were asked who they would allow into a fallout shelter in the event of a nuclear attack and were given 10 options to chose from.

The choices included:

1.) A 16-year-old pregnant girl 2.) A police officer with multiple charges of brutality pending against him, he has his gun 3.) A 38-year-old retired prostitute 4.) A 75-year-old priest 5.) A 35-year-old sterile female doctor 6.) & 7.) A husband and wife. They refuse to be separated. He is a lawyer. She is an alcoholic. 8.) A 31-year-old homosexual architect 9.) A 50-year-old musician, previously addicted to cocaine 10.) A 28-year-old drifter with no apparent skills

In a letter to the families of the students on Tuesday, the principal said they have launched a full investigation into the "deeply inappropriate assignment" which includes the Central Office Administration and a substitute teacher will be provided until the investigation is complete.

"Our school, and our District as a whole, do not approve nor support assignments that are age-inappropriate, out of alignment with the curriculum, and fall outside of New York State standards," Principal Dr. Joseph Coladonato said in a statement. "This assignment violated all of these criteria, and has no place in our classrooms. We condemn this type of material in the strongest possible terms."

Yep! Had my run with this in the late '70s. Interesting dilemma and a neat bit of introspection... provided you weren't into horror movies and wanted to use folks as bait to catch dinner. Come to think of it, that might be why my high school years were so lonely.

Can't believe this is such a huge deal, or can I? Man, I hate modern times.

General “Buck” Turgidson:
Doctor, you mentioned the ratio of ten women to each man. Now, wouldn’t that necessitate the abandonment of the so-called monogamous sexual relationship, I mean, as far as men were concerned?

Dr. Strangelove:
Regrettably, yes. But it is, you know, a sacrifice required for the future of the human race. I hasten to add that since each man will be required to do prodigious... service along these lines, the women will have to be selected for their sexual characteristics which will have to be of a highly stimulating nature.

Ambassador de Sadesky:
I must confess, you have an astonishingly good idea there, Doctor.

the husband and wife are listed as 6 & 7 - only one person per number. Whereas # 1 is two people, you get a bonus if you choose # 1.

Situational ethics. It was being pushed on grade schoolers forty years ago. The choices, then were not quite so...”diverse”, but the effects were the same. Gee, I wonder why our country is so screwed up?

Stinkin’ thinkin’. Children need positive leadership. But that really isn’t the issue. How about just teaching kids to read, write and cypher? Most are not proficient simply because of a lack of focus on the basics. Which means teacher scumbags focus on the wrong things. In a way, I don’t blame the teachers. They have the perfect gig for being illiterates.

Yeah. So. Again I was faced with the trolley problem when young, this would be pre-1980. Life will always have hard choices, maybe not who lives and who dies, unless you wind up a military commander, but there’s always choices. Never too early to start learning how to make hard choices, the no win scenarios, the short term vs long term thinking. This kind of “what are my priorities, what am I trying to accomplish, what do I value” decisions determine our dietary habits, exercise, finance. It’s all the same thinking. Start learning it young, because that is adulthood.

Baloney! There’s plenty of time for that sort of thing to be wrestled with as an adult. The word “ethics” doesn’t mean what it used to, anyway. Narcissistic, amoral, avaricious wolves, teaching in business schools, did away with true ethics decades ago. Trickle down effects followed.

I don’t mind the exercise.

I simply doubt that the teacher had the same quest for youth formation that you outlined.

Your assumption about the “quest” of the teacher is immaterial. The “quest” of the teacher is immaterial. Learning to make hard choices is good. Heck right now we’ve got a thread going “stop blaming me for my student loan debt”. Hard choices. Right there.

Teaching the hard stuff is too time consuming...Easier to do the fun stuff like the BOAT GAME....Most “”diverse”” students aren’t up to reading, writing and especially math(that’s why progressives tell us).....

Because you know. Having to decide who lives and who dies is such a normal part of being an adult.

I am sure you can give dozens of examples of times when you had to make such moral choices and the people you left behind died a horrible death.

Why don't you tell us about a few of them?

Unburden your soul as it were.

In a nuclear attack, a fallout shelter could provide temporary protection from one to fourteen days.

Barring extenuating circumstances, the best answer would be to let them all in.

Survival would require clean air and water. Food would be helpful, but almost anyone can survive a couple of weeks without food. The alcoholic might be at risk of dying if she has no access to any.

Personally, I don’t think the topic is age-inappropriate. However psychographic programming and manipulation are always inappropriate.

You really should learn to READ what is written and ONLY what is written. You make up a lot of content, then demand people explain themselves. But you made it up. I ain’t explaining what came out of your head. And I don’t want your explanation.

I’d choose the 38-year-old retired prostitute as long as she came with a supply of beer.....

Who is bringing back the seventies?

These lifeboat scenarios were in every High School class room in the seventies.

I remember being in a night school class and the teacher excitedly handing them out. The student ages ranged from about 18 to 50s.

All working folk.

The class came to an agreement in less than 5 minutes.

She had planned on having this be the entire class. But working folks are less idealistic and didn’t play the way her teenies in day school did.

5th grade is probably not enough of an ethical foundation there.

“I’d choose the 38-year-old retired prostitute as long as she came with a supply of beer...”

I don’t drink so the beer is optional but, yeah, definitely the hooker. In a post apocalyptic world her skills could come in handy.
Ditto the 16 y/o preggo. She knows how plus she has years of fertility left and skillz to be learned.
Take the gun from Rambo, shoot him if necessary. Show the gun to the lawyer, make him understand you will share the hooker’s beer with the wife but *you* are the Boss and his wife is following your plan. The lawyer acts up he joins the cop outside.
The faggot never gets inside. Faggots are a dead end, we and nature abhor dead ends.
Ditto with the drifter. No skills, no way.

Anybody calling me names for the above can sod off.
It’s TEOTWAWKI, new rules in place.

Variation on the

Life boat game

That my 9th grade English teacher had my class do.

It is designed to destroy the reality of objective absolute truth and instal amoral situational ethics.

I asked how any of it was related to the subject of English

And was sent to the principles office for

” disrupting class”

SSDD.

Spit.
