Suppose a foreign country, whichever, mexico, china, Russia, Etc, sent an army to March into San Francisco and then annexed it into their country.
Rhe citizens of San Francisco would now pay taxes to that country and would would follow thier laws.
Would you fight or have your son fight to liberate the city although it's values are very different from your own? Would you view them as fellow Americans that deserve Liberation just the same?
Or would you gave the opinion that is not worth fighting for?
I believe some of these individuals have no moral compass other than “mah nation”.
If USA annexed Sodom and Gommarah they would be screaming how it needed to be defended.

Our nation, as we knew it, ceased to exist on January 6, 2021.
Many would argue the USA flunked out long before then.
As you probably already know, the rules for use of deadly force are different for private citizens, law enforcement, and the military.
For the first, use of deadly force is usually the least bad choice in a whole range of bad choices. Even if it is ruled a “good shoot,” the aggrieved family and/or anti-gun activists activists may engage in lawfare to bankrupt the shooter. That’s why they sell CCW insurance.
For LEOs, the use of deadly force requires having a lot of less-than-lethal measures either fail or be overcome by events in the moment. In addition, current practice for some prosecutors to regard any ambiguity in a police shooting as a potential murder/manslaughter case makes officers even more reticent to use deadly force.
By contrast, for the military, a threat is a problem and a dead threat is no longer a problem. That’s why non-MP military personnel on domestic civil disturbance duty have to be carefully supervised by law enforcement liaisons. Otherwise, “mistakes” are made.
I imagine that, in reconquering the San Francisco area (or any other area that was invaded), the military might make a number of mistakes regarding persons they encountered whose status was “unclear. “.

Maybe San Francisco is the USA to you, but it isn't to me. It can all burn down, be swallowed up by an earthquake or be invaded, it's doesn't matter one bit to me. My only hope is that you and your fellow pumpkin carvers are there when it happens.
San Francisco is valuable real estate; I'd fight for it on that basis.

Maybe I’m old-fashioned, but if China, Russia, or whatever attacked SF, I’d support a full Congressional Declaration of War, and then unleash the Marines et al on the attacker - not a weak surrogate.
