Your memory is correct as to the official half-assed story about the Connecticut. First, tho, there are no “uncharted seamounts” anywhere in the western Pacific. none. no way. That whole neighborhood is one of the best mapped oceans of the planet. Every US ship that has sailed there since WW II has turned in its charts and the charts have been mapped by the Army Engineers, who do the maps.
There’s no bow damage. It mostly just skipped off the mud for a bit. It came home under its own power. That suggests more of a tactical move like maybe they were sneaking under something, like, oh, say, a chicom ship? The notion that the Connecticut didn’t know where the bottom was, while being quiet, doesn’t pass a biden sniff test.
It won’t surprise me if the Connecticut bottoming doesn’t have something to do with the Chicoms admitting they’ve lost track of a sub? That didn’t have to happen in the last few days. another scene from Red October, maybe?
