Subway Responds After Restaurant Receives Backlash for 'Distasteful' Titan Submersible Joke

The sandwich franchise Subway responded after one of its restaurants received backlash for a tasteless joke about the Titan submersible tragedy.

On July 5, a spokesperson for Subway gave a statement to the “Today” show and confirmed it was aware of the sign.

“We have been in contact with the franchise about this matter and made it clear that this kind of comment has no place in our business,” the spokesperson said. “The sign has since been removed.”

On July 2, Timothy Mauck, based in Georgia, posted a photo to his Facebook page showing a sign outside of a local Subway restaurant that read, “Our subs don’t implode.” The sign referenced the “catastrophic implosion” that killed five passengers aboard the submersible on June 22 after they attempted to make their way to the Titanic wreckage.

The post invoked outrage from Mauck and numerous users on Facebook and Twitter.

Trending: Candace Cameron Bure Denies Allegations She Wanted Queer Character Removed From 'Fuller House' Cast “That’s really bad, bet the owner doesn’t know,” one Facebook user wrote.

Another Facebook user said it was “Kinda messed up.”

“That’s disrespectful as f***k! Bet if that was their family they wouldn’t t (sic) think it’s so funny,” another commented.

One Twitter user declared they will “never eat at Subway ever.”

“It is distasteful and disrespectful to families who lost loved ones,” they added.

Another Twitter user commented, “What an absolute disgrace for Subway to do this they should be ashamed that people lost there (sic) lives and they think its (sic) funny would they find as funny if this terrible disaster happened to them.”

“I agree that to me is (sic) them trying (sic) capitalize on a tragedy in (sic) disrespectful comical way the families should sue them!” one user wrote.

In a follow-up post, Mauck shared a photo of the same Subway sign blank.

“Well looky there…,” he wrote in the caption with laughing emojis.

because jersey mikes is not that good, salty, soggy. An established JM store of many years near me has those small yard sale sized signs out along the road saying they are “now open”. obviously they aren’t that good if they have to resort to tiny signs to let people know they are right there. coupons must not be helping.

Rather go to independent sub /sandwhich places than franchises anyway - since no food can be really good if it’s all mass bought, prepared, and distributed around the country. might as well get a sandwich at the local supermarket deli counter, it’s sliced fresh there too.

I lived in New Jersey for two years. Right on the Jersey Shore. I hated the place. I literally moved my family to Hong Kong to get away from there.

Firehouse is good but not near me or maybe not even in this area (Huntsville, AL.) I usually eat the Subway or Blimpie tuna sub.

As for the sign, I reposted it with the somment “I eat mine at or above sea level.”

Firehouse is my prefered when traveling.

When at home I go to my local deli. A bit more costly but they are really good. And they get their bread from the baker that shares their space so it is always fresh.

If only kids these days had Peters work ethic....

“In 1971, Peter Cancro was a high school student in Point Pleasant, New Jersey. He began working at Mike’s Subs at the age of 14. Peter loved working at Mike’s. He loved authentic submarine sandwiches. But even more, Peter loved working behind the counter, interacting and talking with the customers. He liked learning about where they were from and their summer vacation experiences. He took pride in knowing which authentic sub sandwich his loyal customer would order as they entered the store. When Peter was a senior in high school, he overheard the owner of Mike’s Subs discussing selling the business. He thought to himself, “I love the food, I love working in the store, maybe I’ll buy the shop.” Pretty ambitious for a 17 year old kid. Peter approached his football coach and said “Hey coach, Mike’s Sub shop is for sale, and I’m interested in buying it. Can you help me out?” It didn’t hurt that his football coach was also a banker. The football coach came through for Peter, and backed his loan. So, at the tender age of 17 – before he was legally able to slice a sub – Peter Cancro became the owner and proprietor of Mike’s Subs.”

Not everything needs to be politically tainted.

Not fair when comparing a chain to an independent place - I myself have three in my current neighborhood (Andrea’s, Salerno, Ercolano) that are outstanding. Let’s all agree that Subway is the worst and is only eaten by folks in the sticks who also (until recently) thought that Bud Light was drinkable.

I always found it interesting that the big pizza chains always started in places not known for pizza:

Pizza Hut, Kansas
Dominos, Michigan
Papa Johns, Kentucky
Godfather's, California

There is even a place in Canada known as Houston Pizza, which has no connection with Houston, but the founders wanted to pick a U.S. city that wasn't already taken.

So, Subway was founded in Milford, Connecticut, even though south Connecticut has plenty of great sub shops.

How did it succeed? Subway #2 or #3 was operating in my hometown of Wallingford, Connecticut. Subway used very aggressive coupons, advertised heavily on the album rock stations (WPLR, WHCN) and was open later than anybody except for a couple of sit down diners.

Their audience? People saving money (daytime), partiers and potheads (wee hours). Competition like Dunkin Donuts and Bickford's and Sambo's (Meriden) weren't open yet. The food was not any better, but there was more meat on the bun.

Then, they had the lowest cost entry of any chain, so they sprouted up like mushrooms.

Of course, sandwich shops are cheaper to roll out than frid chicken or hamburger joints, so competitors du jour pop up too:
Potbelly, Firehouse, Quizno's, Jersey Mike's, D'Angelo's, Port of Subs, Jimmy John's, Blimpie and more that I do not know about.

But, back in Wallingford, ten years after Subway opened, and moved a couple of blocks, the competitor it drew was Rosa's Deli, founded by Rosa, who emigrated directly from Italy and filled a real need. In 1981 she started with the 99 cent combo sub. For more, you can get fantastic grinders (and lasagna and polenta). Subway still gets the night crowd and the coupon clippers. But at lunchtime, Rosa's line is out the door, and if you are catering, you go to Rosa. Subway just gets the leftovers and out-of-towners.
