Nato allies back fast-track membership for Ukraine
The Guardian ^ | June 21, 2023

The UK foreign secretary, James Cleverly, has said all Nato allies are backing a plan to give Ukraine a fast track to Nato membership of the kind offered to Sweden and Finland earlier this year.

Speaking on the margins of the two-day Ukraine Recovery conference in London, Cleverly said the UK was “very, very supportive” of Ukraine being able to join Nato without the usual need for it to meet the conditions set out in a Nato membership action plan (Map).

The French foreign minister, Catherine Colonna, was more cautious but said circumstances had changed since 2008 when Ukraine was last offered Nato membership on the condition it met the terms set out in an action plan.

The issue of the terms on which Ukraine is offered Nato membership has been dividing allies before a Nato summit next month. There have been concerns in the US and Germany that early Nato membership for Ukraine might provoke Russia, and change the Nato structure.

Cleverly said the Ukrainian army through the war had modernised and aligned its weaponry with Nato to make it possible to dispense with an action plan. The offer is conceived as an alternative to offering Ukraine a timetable for membership at the Nato summit in Vilnius next month. Ukraine would like a pathway with specific dates...

I support the Ukraine jointing NATO as long as America leaves. Europe can deal with their own problems.

It often seems to be the case that those trying to prevent a past war cause the next war.

“Cleverly said the UK was “very, very supportive” of Ukraine being able to join Nato without the usual need for it to meet the conditions set out in a Nato membership action plan (Map).”

Hilarious. Despite Russian troll claims, Ukraine was actually rejected in previous bids to join NATO, even when they wanted to jump through all the usual hoops.

Now, thanks to Putin, Ukraine will get an easy admission with no hoop jumping necessary. They should give Putin the “NATO Salesman of the Year” award.

Just as Ukkraine is in a war with Russia, we’ll have them sign with NATO.

What can go wrong?

How about “No”.
There are reasons Uke is not already a nato member.
They want us fully involved in a world war that will kill millions of us in a misguided notion (or outright lie) of “saving the planet”. Much grief and agony could be avoided simply by quickly and quietly dispatching the comparatively few people actually behind this.

Apparently the US Senate would have to agree to allow Ukraine to join NATO:

There are no rules any more.

The West seems very focused on destabilizing Russia. I get it: Putin is a bad guy. But this is going to end up like overthrowing the Shah of Iran. That one destabilized the Middle East and caused decades of wars. If Russia is destabilized, a lot of regions are going to descend into unrest and war. Nukes might be used, or they might merely become "missing". The repercussions of how the West is "dealing with" the Ukraine situation are going to be immense, and they won't be good.

Adding Ukraine to NATO while it is in the middle of a war?

Nothing wrong there.

The Russians are pretty ruthless-disgusting too. Just look at their history. Then look at what they’ve been through over the centuries. Can you blame them for being so paranoid? They need to be confined to a nation of Russians. That would break them up to where they’re no longer a great nation like Rome and the British Empire(was). Expanding NATO might be the right thing to do but it will make things worse before they get better. Russia can’t blame Finland for wanting in. It’s the western mind-think that keeps everyone chilled out. I’m wondering if our pull-out would be positive as well as overdue.

The Chicoms are not afraid of a nuclear Holocaust. It’s the Asian mind-think. What’s a million Chinese?

Well, that’s the kind of utter stupidity that just guarantees Russia will make an all-out effort to completely take it over and re-establish “the Borderlands” (the literal translation of Ukraine) as a pro-Russian buffer state.

Not so sure. The old rules don’t seem to apply any more under an imperial presidency.

"The US is, amazingly, opposed."

Because it would effectively have the US directly at war. And despite the best efforts at influencers (paid or unpaid), there is no way to justify it. It would be seen as a flimsy pretext without a formal declaration of war.

Not to mention that if the nukes fly, DC is the first target. And in today's environment, 'rally 'round the flag' might not work.

“In January 2016, the Labour Party proposed an amendment to the Housing and Planning Bill 2016 that would have required private landlords to make homes which they put up for rent “fit for human habitation”. According to Parliament’s register of interests, Cleverly was one of 72 Conservative MPs who voted against the amendment and who personally derived an income from renting out property. The Conservative Government had responded to the amendment by saying that they believed homes should be fit for human habitation but did not want to pass the new law that would explicitly require it.”
