The BBC’s modern reworking of Great Expectations has suffered a ratings flop, losing nearly 3 million viewers since the first episode aired last month.
Steven Knight’s adaptation, which stars Olivia Colman as Miss Havisham and Fionn Whitehead as Pip, has been mired in controversy over accusations of wokery and the inclusion of opium addiction and sadomasochism.
Episode one pulled in 4.4 million viewers, reaching a peak of 5.5 million, but 1.8 million had switched off by episode two.
Last week’s penultimate episode only managed to draw in 1.5 million, some 2.9 million down on the first instalment.

Can hardly blame the BBC for trying to spice up Dickens. Duller prose was never written.
I watched the first two episodes and quit because it was even darker and duller than the original.
Dickens was paid by the word so there was a lot of excess verbiage. Nothing a good editor couldn’t fix. He had good plots and great characters.
Nothing will ever exceed David Lean's 1946 version with John Mills, Jean Simmons,
Finaly Curie, and Alec Guinness. Once you've sen that version it ruins all the others. The
only thing better is to read the book itself.
I saw it many years ago and would like to see it again.
Some younger people don’t know Alec Guinness had major acting roles before Star Wars.
Maybe they should instead do an adaption of the MADtv skit series “Lowered Expectations”.
There is a remarkable version of great expectations on brit box.
