Can hardly blame the BBC for trying to spice up Dickens. Duller prose was never written.

Nothing will ever exceed David Lean's 1946 version with John Mills, Jean Simmons,
Finaly Curie, and Alec Guinness. Once you've sen that version it ruins all the others. The
only thing better is to read the book itself.
