Mother of 16-year-old boy, who is in serious condition, urges other parents to not let their children use electronic cigarettes
A teenager was hospitalized Thursday due to collapsed lungs that were apparently caused by using electronic cigarettes.
The 16-year-old boy was being treated at the Schneider Children’s Medical Center of Israel, where he was listed in serious condition.
The hospital said he was being treated in the intensive care unit with an extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) machine, which provides cardiac and respiratory assistance.
The boy’s mother asked Israelis to pray for his health and urged other parents not to let their children use electronic cigarettes, often referred to as vapes.
The Israeli Association of Public Health Physicians called for greater preventive measures to block the sale of tobacco products to children and urged a ban on electronic cigarettes.
“Using electronic cigarettes endangers lives,” Hagai Levine, a leading public health official, tweeted in response.
In 2019, the Health Ministry considered a total ban on electronic cigarettes due to reports regarding electronic cigarette-related deaths in the US amid a surge in vape usage, particularly among young people.
In June, the US Food and Drug Administration banned the sale of vape products produced by Juul Labs Inc., due to the high levels of nicotine found in the flavored oils produced by the company.
Israel already placed a ban on importing Juul products containing more than 20 milligrams of nicotine in 2018. Electronic cigarette usage remains legal.
Vapers are like the Ed Hardy shirt wearers of yesteryear
I suspect it’s what he’s vaping that is the problem.
What is that?
The vape cartridge was probably not manufacturer issue.
there were reports from years ago about the accelerated impact on the lungs
When I was vaping an herb to help me get to sleep I would take one single 3 or 4 second draw. That’s it. Hard for me to believe that serious health consequences would come out of that.
Any product that results in even one death must be banned! If some idiot misuses a product and is hurt of course all users must be punished!
That’s my thought. It’s not so much that he was inhaling gas - it’s what we do - but WHAT he inhaled.
Are you sure there aren’t scientifically attested better ways to get to sleep than that herb?
“Using electronic cigarettes endangers lives”
So does a boot stomping on a human face, forever.
I no longer do it. Most of the Rx sedatives and hypnotics have vicious adverse effects profiles. But I found an older one, almost forgotten now, and asked for a prescription. It works! And really no side effects at all. No OTC sleep promoter I tried did any more than help “a little”.
this is idiotic.
pneumothorax is caused by the opening of a hole in the lung, preventing it from expanding with air/air builds up in the chest cavity, causing the lung to “collapse”. the boy may have coughed hard casing the hole [I’ve seen that happen to a 14 year old after a coughing fit]
article fails to state
Not saying the vape didn’t cause a coughing fit, just saying the vape was not a unique irritant that was a triggering event. No evidence referenced in article the vape material itself caused a pneumothorax, which is what the ‘reporter’ is trying to imply and cause reader to believe.
14 year old was coughing due to dust in the air while mowing a lawn, btw.
When it was still “Corona,” it was noted that propylene glycol prevents viruses from entering through the lungs and is what’s used in fog machines and vapes. There were jokes about buying enough fog machines. Then they discovered nicotine combats Covid. The third ingredient is glycerin. I started vaping immediately because I already knew nicotine was good for stabilizing neurons and helped when I was a teen/ young adult. I haven’t gotten Covid, as far as I know, and it’s helped with the stress of this mess. I also bought Ivermectin around the same time. I thank God I worked in a research hospital years ago and was already anti-vax then.
I would assume it is “what he vaped” rather than “the vaping” that did him in.
I bought an electronic piano, and play it an hour before going to bed. I sleep deep at night, having vented all my cussing before. (Progress is slow. Nobody wants to teach a 73 year old how to play the piano.)
Yes, but it might be that excessive vaping in itself is a hazard. Some teenagers draw those flavored products hundreds of times a day.
I did not realize I was missing out on deep phase IV sleep for decades and forgot what it was like. Now I’m getting it once again bigly.
My son has quickly developed a horrific cough since he began vaping, which he does almost nonstop all day.
The devices & products were originally marketed to gullible folks as non-addictive, thus safer than, and a way to quit, cigarettes.
Users are sucking in nicotine and the droplets from weirdly perfumed oils, plus microscopic hard minerals & acids off the batteries that power the devices.
