Weekly Garden Thread - March 18-24, 2023 [Forcing Flowering Branches into Bloom Edition]
March 18, 2023 | Diana in WI/Greeneyes in Memoriam

Posted on 03/18/2023 6:57:53 AM PDT by Diana in Wisconsin

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

So bad! Supposedly raccoons do not like certain fragrances like pepper mint or garlic. You might plant marigolds and basil around your tomatoes and see what happens? (Chipmunks still eat off the lower branches>) Maybe spray or sprinkle the vines with cayanne pepper (that you can wash off the tomatoes when ripe.) Good luck!

Two words : Live Traps

Works for me. I caught 3 destructive critters in the last 10 days. Relocated to nice food-rich wilderness.

😅

Also, the Jung’s Catalog is open on my desk in front of me.

I am contemplating another three-clump of my favorite Japanese Whitespire Birch for one spot, a Seven Son Flower for another and a Ninebark for a third. ;)

Why not? The SS check comes next week, and all three will add value and beauty to my property. ;)

Dahlias! These three just FELL into my cart when we were at Menard's (like Home Depot or Lowe's) yesterday!

'Orange Nugget'

'Night Queen'

'Glorie Van Heemstede'

And thought I rarely plant pastel colored flowers in my garden (I like BOLD!) I kinda fell for these candy-colored Gladiolus, so I bought them, too. They're just called 'Pastel Mix' and I don't remember ever seeing them before.

No shooting last night, just treeing and shining for points. BUT - Coon Season is back in full swing again, and it never stops if you’re on your own land or have permission to hunt another’s.

The BIG excitement was that they had a new kid show up who is just 16 and has only hunted a few times so far. Beau took him with his cast, as they were all seasoned hunters. The kid had a good time and will be back, he said.

Sadly, it’s a dying sport, so they are always thrilled to get the youngsters involved. Beau is the ‘youngster’ in his hunting group...and he’s 63! ;)

Projects this weekend:

Plant seeds. I purchased a seed starter kit: seed tray (holds 18 3-4” peat pots), top with vents, grow light(s) & a heat mat. My issue has been where to put planted pots to sprout & grow - no window room. I remembered we bought a bedside table (hospital style) for dad & never got to use it. It is large enough & very sturdy so I am putting it together to hold my seed starting equipment. I can get it near a window or anywhere else because of the grow lights providing the actual light needed.

Fix my laptop (install new fan). I have one stinking screw that is stripped & keeping the case from opening (guess I did it the last time I replaced the fan). After trying all the “tricks” for small stripped screws on YouTube, I spent the money for a “micro screw extractor” set - hope it works. I also purchased replacement screws for all I will take out & replace so if I have to get in again, no stripped screws. The cost of the fan, screw extraction kit, & new screws is still way below what I would have to pay a PC shop to just look at the laptop.

Work on boxwood project. We have had close to an inch of rain over the last week (including yesterday & last night) so the dirt is too wet/muddy to work. I need to get soil amendments so can go to the store this weekend for that. No rain & warmer temps next week so I can do the digging necessary & hopefully get the shrubs in before next weekend when there is more rain coming.

I may get the mower out - couple of spots where the grass gets super thick are getting ‘shaggy’ & knocking the grass down early would make mowing easier when the rest of the grass starts catching up.

Beautiful time of year here with spring blooming going on. Tons of robins in the fields, bluebirds all over the place. All the birds are doing a lot of singing, as are the frogs down in the “wet corner” of our property. I love being outside this time if year.

So pretty - all of them! Something else I want are snap dragons - my dad’s mom grew them outside her kitchen door and I loved them as a child.

Sadly, it’s a dying sport

Doesn't help that hides went from over $10 to $2-3 each. It used to be something my neighbor would do to bring in some money for Christmas and another chunk of money to spend in the Spring.

Yep. Beau gives the coon hides he gets to friends of ours that make BEAUTIFUL items from the fur - I have a Raccoon Headband that I just love; velvet lined and it is really warm.

She is currently making Beau a vest from raccoon. Should be interesting. (I’ll just leave it at that, LOL!)

He’s gotten two ‘Blond’ raccoon through the year; we have those pelts displayed, and a while back he got a really nice black raccoon which is also pretty uncommon.

But, yes. Interest has greatly waned since they’re not worth spit these days.

Maybe with our banking system going bust, we can deal in fur again? ROFLMAO! I crack myself up!

“I hope S.Other Does not harass you to chew his boots in the morning before he goes racoon hunting!”

LOL! Nope. He had a whole bucket of rendered bear fat for just that purpose. And we just bought toe-scuff protectors for his favorite pair the other day. He’s good. :)

Cayenne pepper sounds like a quick and easy solution. Thanks!

In Florida, live-captured raccoons must be euthanized, released on-site, or released on a property within the same county of capture that is 40 acres or larger with written
permission from the landowner.

I’ve been meaning to ask: With all of Beau’s hunting and fishing contacts, does he know a good place to fish for salmon that doesn’t require either boat or fishing guide?

Every time I do a search on the subject, all I see are guided fishing tours. I just want some salmon for the freezer.
