Weekly Garden Thread - March 11-17, 2023 [Gardening After 60 Edition]
March 11, 2023 | Diana in WI/Greeneyes in Memoriam

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

Anybody grow rutabagas?

I didn't do rutabagas or turnips last year, but I generally do one or the other, and some years I do both. Those two are about as easy as it gets. Scratch up some dirt, throw some seed down, water it in, come back in three months and dig em out.

I've got one of these and it's saved me a ton of work. Built a set of forks for the back and I put a lot of stuff on pallets now. I have a finish mower, dirt scoop, snow plow and grader blade for it. Next thing is to put it to work on garden beds. Been keeping my eye out for garden bed implements.

I can run it all day on a couple of gallons of diesel fuel but I rarely run it all day. Usually a few minutes here and there, an hour one day and then not use it for days so I top off the tank once a month on average.

but I AM starting my tomato plants today! Yay!

Yep, about time to start anything that gets started indoors. Johnny's calculator says Mar 18 - Apr 8 for maters but my 2022 gardening notes start off with "Start Things Earlier" because of last summer's early start and extra high temps.

My little grow tent is keeping somewhat steady temps in the unheated room with two heat mats going. I've got two more and will get at least two more flats going and then I can have four heat mats going. That should steady things out even more.

More lights going will help heat things and I just finally ordered a 6 pack of grow lights to add to the two I have. Got peas and bunching onions started a couple of weeks ago and they're doing good. Going to start a couple more trays of hardy stuff today and then next week when the lights come in and are set up, I'll start maters. Peppers soon after that.

Late Winter weather still going. Lows near 20 sometimes. High near 60 sometimes and always windy. Haven't done any welding on the high tunnel frames due to cold and/or wind and/or rain. High tunnel for this Spring is not going to be a thing but I'll be able to get it done enough to put the top plastic on and throw shade cloth over for July/Aug. Sides and ends are more involved.

Seems this job thing is taking up my time(and energy). LOL. After 2-3 - 12 hour days on my feet, I don't want to do much on that first day off other than sit on my butt.

I built a chicken plucker similar to the whiz bang plucker but mine was powered by the PTO on my little tractor. It was quite a rig but worked. I borrowed the gear box from my finish mower but ran it backwards to slow it down rather than speed up. Me and a neighbor did 2 dozen birds. Toss two freshly scolded birds in the plucker and in 20 seconds, they were feather free. Never got a pic of my rig but below is how I plan to put the barrel and bottom disc with the rubber fingers back together with electric motor to power as per original plucker design plans.

I rigged together what I had but taking apart the finish mower every year isn't something I want to do. [I'm probably the only person who can say I drove my chicken plucker to the neighbor's house though]

He had a 16 foot square, 8 foot tall chain link dog pen so I raised the birds until they feathered out in a small pen and then brought them up to his place get to size and that's where we processed them. Killed my food saver on that task.

Clueless to what that means. Guess I’m too young.

Ended up Spring yard cleaning. Not too windy so we raked and burned leaves, tidied up around the house.

Again, been there, done that.

An interview I saw many years ago: “We asked a 100 year old woman what was the best invention she’d seen in her long life. Her answer? ‘Running water in the house.’”

Picking up bales, throwing space monsters out the airlock, breaking through antifa check points, It would be a great tool!

Good mashed with potatoes, a bit of onion salt and butter! Also good sliced long and thin and used in Japanese soups.

Window Screening would have to be in there somewhere, especially if you have a dairy farm.

Bon. Nice to have all that rain but now you have to worry about riding a sliding hillside to the valley bottom!

I’m the valley bottom! I have to worry about all that mud coming down on ME.

Just had my trees checked out - lots of falling trees here, landscaper said my were fine, Thank God. Some neighbors weren’t so lucky.
