He was born in Africa, and is now an American citizen.
He's an African-American, more so than someone whose family has been in America for hundreds of years.
..and born in South Africa.
In the current issue of Physics Today there’s a review of the book Astrotopia by Mary-Jane Rubenstein. Subtitle is “The dangerous religion of the corporate space race.”
It takes to task Musk, Bezos, Branson and others calling their efforts a “mythological project” analogous to the type of “imperial Christianity” that was used by Europeans to colonize more than half the planet.
One paragraph: “Rubenstein convincingly demonstrates that NASA and US politicians used Christian imperialist language to justify the Apollo mission. In other words, it’s no coincidence that the Apollo 8 crew read from the book of Genesis while orbiting the Moon on Christmas Eve 1968.”

Uh, no. “We” did not invent it. Jesse Jackson and his ilk invented it in the 1980s.
Also, Elon was born and raised in South Africa which makes him an “African American” the same way an immigrant from Germany is a German American, or an Italian is an “Italian American”.
I hope Elon has plenty of security. I could see Biden sending saboteurs to scuttle this thing.

No. He’s an African born US citizen, regardless of his ancestry.
I have Swedish, English, Scottish and German ancestry, but since neither I nor my parents were born in any of those places, we can’t claim those nationalities.
Elon and his father were born in South Africa, his mother was born in Canada and moved to South Africa.
Elon is now an American - an African born US citizen.
How bout we just be Americans?

The Boers are African.
Though descended from Euro immigrants to Africa, they became their own thing, very much like Americans, or Australians, or Canadians, ceased to be British.
And they are only partly of Dutch stock. An important element were French Huguenots (refugee Protestants), plus other random Euros of all kinds. Charlize Theron is one of those Huguenot descendants.
