The "I'm here so I don't get fined" phrase didn't work very well for Marshawn Lynch. The former Seattle Seahawks running back has now revealed the amount he needed to pay for refusing to speak to the media.

One of the most memorable phrases in recent NFL history comes from Marshawn Lynch, who thought he could get away from interviews by saying "I'm here so I don't get fined". Now, he has revealed the amount he was asked to pay by the NFL for refusing to speak to the media.

Marshawn Lynch is one of the most dominant running backs in NFL history. He paired up with Russell Wilson at the Seattle Seahawks to create a very scary offense for their rivals.

He was so popular that everybody wanted to know more about him, but he wasn't thrilled about that idea. He refused to speak to the media throughout his entire career and now he has revealed how much did it cost him to do it.......

Speaking in the "I'm an Athlete" podcast, Lynch revealed how much he payed for not giving interviews. The running back said he was fined for $1.2 million for refusing to speak to media.

During the Super Bowl XLIX Media Day, Lynch was asked by the NFL to speak to the media. To every single question the running back answered with "I'm here so I don't get fined" until his time on the stand ended.

Would be interesting to see what his contract requires. $1.2 Million for not answering media questions seems unAmerican.

Maybe he had to seal the planks of a boat as punishment.

How much of a fine for deflating footballs in an AFC title game?

Apparently a lot of people still think the NFL is a sports league.

It’s not. It’s a TV show.

So an NFL player who refuses to speak to the media is like Archie Bunker going through an entire episode of “All in the Family” without speaking a single line.

Pitcher Steve Carlton used to get away with it all the time. No fines that I can recall.

I believe all NFL contracts require engagement with the media, with financial penalties to be assessed by the NFL. It's too bad - the NFL is badly overexposed and no one needs to see one more athlete being forced to utter cliches, but he did sign the contract.

“He should be compensated for keeping his mouth shut”

If he gave short boring answers in a monotone, no one would be interested in talking to him and the problem would be solved.

Ah yes. The Gray Rock technique. Works great when dealing with psychopaths as well.

“fined” and “Asked to pay” are not the same thing at all. Which was it? And unless it’s in his contract that he must give substantive answers to press questions, he should have told them to kiss his a$$.

The CBA requires a level of media availability, especially at the SB. They want you to promote the product, capitalism.

I thought it was hilarious at the time. Almost as good as “He Hate Me” in one of the spin off leagues years ago.
